Getting the boot

There's been a lot of happy stuff going on in my life lately, so I'm going to go ahead and do some complaining now. Not about being married, though. That's still pretty awesome ( Read more... )

boot! you probably don't remember, but I had one of these, once. it was a pain in the ass. I didn't wear it very often, but it did make a great noise. Derekh & Cossar called it my MegaMan boot. what really helped me (and I had plantar fasciitis) was wearing a soft boot at night and doing lots a stretching and massaging and weird things like picking up marbles with my toes. I kind liked my podiatrist, if you're really over yours I can give you his name.

good luck with your foot! nothing is worse for us walkers than to be in pain when walking.

Thanks! I remember mentioning your boot when I had my comparably non-monstrous (but mostly ineffective) mini-brace thing! I'm not sure if I ever saw MegaMan Boot in action, though. I definitely thought of you when the nurse was telling me not to walk anyplace.

I'm going to wait and see with my podiatrist -- I may yet investigate yours. I like mine but it feels in retrospect like it should not have taken six months to get to this point. But at the time, I liked that he gave me several options of differing severity, so it might be partially my fault for hoping that it could just get better through taping and bracing. I think if I had been like "yo, physical therapy, let's do it!" at the outset, he would've said, good idea and recommended someone. But I've been resisting as it is expensive.

I went to physical therapy. It was okay. I have awesome health insurance, so it wasn't expensive for me, but if it had been I might have been pissed cause it was like a magic cure or something. Basically, we are hard on our feet and once you have a problem you have to be careful about it forever. Which sucks. Maybe get custom orthotics--they're expensive, but since you wear flat sneakers all the time, they might really help. Did he offer you that? I have some, but they don't work in heels of any height, which I wear for comfort (weird things happen when you have plantar fasciitis), but they might help you more.

Cause it wasn't like a magic cure. Sorry.

I think that in trying to understand the nurse's perspective, you're forgetting about the Cab People. This is understandable, because they are ridiculous people. But the fact is there are people who live and work in New York City every day and don't walk long distances OR ride the subway. They take cabs everywhere.

Fair point. Nathaniel said something to similar effect, that he knew people who could think of no way to get across town but take a cab. Yikes. If I were rich enough to take a cab more than once a month, I would've paid for physical therapy and/or bionic feet a long time ago.

There are also people who live in the suburbs and drive into the city to work each day. Like what Marisa does, but the opposite. I find it insane.
