Do you really think it hurt Club Dread to open opposite The Passion? I really can't imagine there was much overlap. Well, maybe for stoners. "Dude, we could see the funny movie? On the island? Or the one in frickin' Aramaic! DUDE!"
I think The Passion sucked up so much media attention -- especially in a normally competition-light release period -- that awareness of Club Dread was probably hurt a bit. But, you're right, it probably wasn't a case of the target audience getting busy with Jesus. And the marketing was really bad -- the commercials, I remember, had a pretty high "what the hell is that??" quotient.
I do think that the release date could've been a factor in it turning out to be one of the lowest-grossing wide releases of the year, rather than making $15 million or so but not expanding on the Super Troopers audience.

She is?? I only knew about the "Boots" cover... is this also for the Dukes soundtrack? Will she appear in an accompanying stripper/line-dancing video for it?
The crew may have had a great time making it, as I'm sure Sandler's guys always do, but it doesn't show on screen; the movie is half-hearted.
Maybe in 40 years a visionary filmmaker will remake, say, Billy Madison as a stylish, sexy classic, in manner of Ocean's Eleven (original stars had a heap of fun, made below-par movie; remake is infinitely better due to brilliant director and enormously famous cast). No? It was a thought.
Ha. At least Billy Madison has evidence of fun onscreen (or as I call it, "Norm MacDonald"). I really thought Longest Yard should've been a shoo-in but where were the damn jokes??
Great article. Unfortunately, the only thing it really makes me want to do is watch Super Troopers :-).
Hey, what's your e-mail? I want to send you a short film my friend Phil and I made. It's about the darkness and tragedy of the human condition, or something art-faggity and film-festivalish like that.
