The best laid plans

This week, I noticed some weird things involving my fuel. Like when I'm near or below the 1/4 mark, the car has trouble starting. And the needle tends to fluctuate anywhere from just below 1/2 down to the E. So I had that on my mind. I was even thinking of calling Car Talk this morning. Also, with gas prices where they are, I was talking about maybe trying to get a motorcycle for my daily driving. And then, joy of joys, my boss let us all out of work a good 15-20 minutes early. And then God did bitch slap me!

I'll spare you the details, but let's just say I expect to be getting a new car. I think that if you're T-Boned at 25+ mph, there's a good chance that your frame will be bent, and once that happens, your car really isn't worth fixing. And in case you're wondering, yes, I was T-Boned by a woman doing 25+ as I drove home yesterday afternoon.

It's been a really good week for me and those around me, so this gives me pause. In the past three days alone, my brother & his wife FINALLY found a house after searching for what felt like an eternity. The next day, they finally sold a house they've had on market for around 6 months and just could not get sold. My sister called yesterday (just a few hours before the accident) to tell me how great things have been at her new job. Long story short, her goal this month is $8,000, but just weeks into the month, she's approaching $28,000. And yesterday, right around the time I was hit, one of my lose friends was getting a job offer that knocked his socks off.

So the reason I have to pause is that I got lucky, too. Had I been two feet further into the interection when this woman hit me, I don't know what kind of shape I'd be in. As it was, the driver door hinge area took most of the hit, and it was hard enough that my glovebox won't close. My door armrest hit me in the side and that was about it. Had she hit the center of my door... well, I'd be pretty banged up. So as much as I want to be mad and sad, I have to give a nod to my good fortune and accept that I actually came out of this ahead.

Further good news is that the woman is taking full responsibility and is properly insured. This is going to be a pain in the ass, but it's all going to work out fine. I'm gonna point out my concerns to her adjuster and we're gonna get this taken care of. On that note, anyone who has advice or experience with this, I don't, so please share. If my sub-frame has been bent, I don't want it repaired. Once that happens, your car is never the same again, and I don't want any part of that. So I may or may not have to do some haggling to get them to agree to total it out. In addition, I had to get a rental car, because I'll be damned if I'm gonna let this ruin my weekend (which involved plans of going out of town and seeing friends). I got the cheapest I could arrange at the time, but I imagine I'll have to argue a bit to get reimbursed for it. Unless they'd rather pay my lost wages for missing work, they're paying for my rental car. I'll let them decide.

Well, I'm glad to have gotten all of that off my chest. Just remembering the accident has brought back all the adrenaline (God, was I pumped up for a while after that!). I now have to swing by the bank and take care of some thigns and I think I'll spend my afternoon checking out cars. Oh, and for all my local friends, as I said in stlouis, I will be accepting pity parties and condolence cocktails as well as donations in the form of cash, check, and full frontal nudity.

P.S. It took me about an hour to write this on the web form instead of using my usual client.
