After that last post, that would be a no-brainer, but I failed to mention that I have no intention of maintaining the status quo. This is the right question, though, and it's a question I would have to ask my boss. Do I even want to ask him, though? What I'm really trying to decide is whether to even give them the opportunity to keep me around, or just say I'm leaving and that's the end of it.
Some things simply can't or won't change. My boss' boss will still piss me off once in a while. The end users will still be the same people, and still have the same traits. I will still work with that frequent douchebag.
Some things I can try to change. I can ask for a new title/position. I can ask them to assign the stupid responsibilities (fixing staplers) to the douchebag from now on, since I've been doing it for 5 years and he only steps up when I'm on vacation. I can demand a pay raise.
Or, even if they gave me what I asked for, would that be enough? Can I be happy and be here? No idea...
