It's my birthday!

The big 2-0.

I'm 20 years old, starting my third decade of life. I'm no longer a teen, I'm in my early twenties, that's like totally surreal. Now I can say, look at those ne'er do well teenagers and not be grouped with them. Wow. What a difference one number up makes. Me, of all people, I don't look or act twenty--I'm the height of a twelve year old and I either act shifty-five or thirteen.

When I was an ignorant tween, I hated my birthday because it was on Valentine's Day. I used to get cards on it with kissing bears or stuffed animal dogs hugging or some crap like that. I don't really like conversation hearts that much, and I try not to eat too much chocolate--the holiday wasn't very tailored toward me. Also, my friends couldn't really buy me flowers or balloons on my bday because it's damn expensive on V-day, so that sucked. I developed a very strange aversion to anything shaped like a heart or anything that was red/pink. That was when I was into rap/metal. Those were darker times. Anyway, in high school, I started to appreciate my birthday more, and I think it's pretty effing cool now. Especially when you get heart shaped necklaces from Tiffany & Co as your b-day present. Or red coach scarves. Valentine's Day may be corporate, and it may not really even be a "real holiday," but I enjoy it nevertheless. Thank you Hershey's and Hallmark!

I've been alive for two decades, pretty good ones at that, so hopefully they only get better from here. When I think in terms of landmarks, it's pretty weird. In about four years, I'll graduate from medical school, everything willing. Then before you know it, I'll be twenty-five and according to Jessica Simpson, "That's almost halfway to thirty!"

Then I'll be thirty, and I'll start watching stuff on CBS or something. Shudder.
But until then, I'll just enjoy the now as it comes. I have to go and study for a test I have tomorrow--yay--it always seems like I have tests on my birthday, which blows.

For all those who do not have a birthday today, Happy Valentine's Day! Hope you share it with people you love, or at least like.
