Try switching to HTML view. Find the point where you want the cut to start. Type in
<*lj-cut text="text">
Go to the end of the post, where you want the cut to finish and type in
<*/lj-cut>
Without the stars, of course and where the text inside the quote marks is what you want the cut text to say. The other way of making cuts has been broken for several months now and I can't get it to work, either.
Also, if you're posting on DW, you can link that journal to this one and cross-post just by ticking a box. The cuts on DW translate to LJ without problem so you can also mirror your posts here. That's how I do my CC-release announcements - by posting it on DW and ticking the box to cross-post to my LJ.
