Revisiting my past ... at warp speed

I'm heading toward western Michigan in the morning. We are heading up a day earlier than the rest of my family. We'll be at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore tomorrow afternoon and at Michigan's Adventure amusement park on Wednesday. Wednesday night, we'll meet up with my mom and a couple of my siblings (among others) in Holland, Michigan where we will spend a couple of days. Then, we'll move south to Indiana Beach amusement park near Monticello, Indiana; the site of our earliest family vacations and prior to that; the site where my parents vacationed pre-kids. There, we'll meet up with the rest of my immediate family.

For the occasion, one sister decided we needed to stay in a single cabin (sleeps 10) for two nights. The last time we were there as a family, in 1961, we stayed in a cabin with my parents and 4 kids. This will be strange as Susan and I have really gotten used to staying in nice places when we travel on vacation. I'm sure it will work out, and likely make for humorous and interesting photos.

I visited Indiana Beach amusement park in the summer of 1999 when I was doing summer residency at Indiana University while working on my ill-fated PhD. I went there as part of my long-term quest to validate memories of my youth. I've revisted nearly all of the places we went when I was a kid; just to see if my memories were somewhat accurate. I've found the memories were right on target EVERYWHERE I've been. I suggested the Indiana Beach expeience for my siblings as they will get to relive (very accurately) something they have in deep memory. My 82-year-old mom is by far the most enthusiastic about this trip.

Michigan is about her (it is the ONLY state she's never visited); as is Indiana Beach at Shafer Lake; as she has MANY great memories of this place; but hasn't been here since 1961. I came up with the idea, and ALL of my siblings and significant others bought into the idea. Now, it's time to take hundreds of photos. It should be a great trip. Time for bed, as we hit the road in 6 hours.
