Arthur walks into his chambers, loosening his belt and throwing it on the bed. He pauses at the table to get a drink, when he realizes he hasn’t heard a word from his wife. He looks up and is momentarily mesmerized by her tiny physique being outlined by the noon sunlight. He walks up to her, quietly. He wants to give her a little scare. He hasn’t heard her laugh in a while.

“Arthur.”

One word makes him stop. That’s all it took. He was wrapped around her finger. He the puppet, she the puppeteer.

Guinevere turns around, and her eyes are slightly red, her eyebrows scrunched together.

“Were you crying?” Arthur comes up to her in two big strides and takes her in his arms. A moment of silence later, he chides himself mentally for the obvious.

“Why are you crying?”

Guinevere loosens herself from Arthur’s grip and looks at him. Her mouth is open, yet her eyes travel. The words escape her.

“I….”

Guinevere starts again.

“Am I able…will I….is it right for me to be a queen?”

The words come out hesitantly. Guinevere takes a deep breath and looks out the window. Her past life. She never thought she would become royalty. She had no lessons.

Arthur moves beside her to look out the window. His hand rests on the small of her back.

“Why do you suddenly doubt yourself?”

Guinevere moves away from Arthur’s touch.

“Arthur. How can I have been so blind? I’m not fit for this job! Those nobles, they sneer at me! And it’s true! What am I? I’ve only known how to be a servant, how to be below others! Can I rule justly? Can I rule fairly?”

As her monologue continues, Guinevere’s voice becomes higher and higher and her hands grab at her dress in tight fists.

Arthur watches her catch her breath, her eyes watering up again.

Guinevere’s eyes widen, her breath hitches, as she feels her husband’s lips on her forehead.

“Guinevere Pendragon.” His voice is low and muffled by his lips’ proximity to his wife’s forehead. Yet it doesn’t keep from Guinevere shivering at hearing her name in his voice.

“Do you know why I fell in love with you?”

There’s a silence as Guinevere thinks of an answer.

“Because…I honestly haven’t the slightest idea.”

“You made me a better person.”

Arthur ‘s nose slightly skims along Guinevere’s skin as he moves downward.

“I  am a more humble person, because of you.”

Arthur kisses Guinevere’s cheek.

“Because you, make me the best King I could possibly be. Where would I be without you as my confidante?”

Arthur kisses Guinevere lightly on the lips.

Guinevere smiles at the compliments. Arthur isn’t shy with his compliments. He never was. But each compliment is still a gem to Guinevere.

Guinevere opens her mouth to protest once more, but Arthur motions at the window.

“Those are your people. They have a bond with you that I never can have. You are their voice. How do you make me a better King? You have a gentle heart. Unfortunately….” Arthur trails off, and Guinevere knows he’s thinking of his father. Arthur looks at Guinevere.

“Guinevere, I made a lot of mistakes. Yet you still forgave me every time. You have compassion, Guinevere, and you are passionate for what you believe in. Without you, I wouldn’t be half the king I am now. And, besides, what is a king without his queen beside him? ”

Guinevere simply looks up at him.

“I love you, Arthur.” She states simply.

“I know.” Arthur jokes, earning a light slap on the arm. He bends down to kiss his tiny wife.

“I will love you for a thousand years, Guinevere.” He whispers in her ear.

Arthur straightens up.

“Well, my lady?” Arthur bends his arm, offering it to Guinevere. “Shall we take a trip down to the villages?”

Guinevere grins and takes him.

“Let’s.”
