Tutorial: Rafa Nadal (yellow/orange images)

May 30, 2009 16:14

Boy, this chico is so tanned that it's HELL finding a coloring for him XD
Plus, this was a cap from some TV special, hence, the quality was even worse..and basically dark yellow/orange.

Program used: Photoshop 8
Translatable: no
Involves: selective colors, gradient map
PSD: no

How to go from
to

I'm using this cap from vamosbrigade.com

Crop it as you want and all that jazz.

Now we need to lighten it and give it some contrast. We'll duplicate the base 4 times:
set the first layer to multiply 100% (don't worry, it looks even darker, but we're going to fix it)
set the second to soft light 100% (this way we'll giving some contrast)
set the last 2 duplicated layers to screen 100%. Yellow much? yeah, but at least we can distinguish his features, no?

Now, in order to give it more contrast we'll use a gradient map (Layer>>New adjustment layer>>Gradient map).
Choose the black-to-white grayscale and set the layer to soft light 70%

Mejor, no?

The most important part, now. Getting rid of the yellow.
We'll use a selective color layer. (Layer>>New adjustment layer>>Selective Color
R: -28, 4, 38, 37
Y: 0,-63,-100,0
W: 20, -22, -4,0
N: 33, -8, -25, 9
B: 0, 0, 0, 15

and he looks human again XD

There's still some yellow, though. We can use a photofilter layer (Layer>>New adjustment layer>>Photofilter), choosing the Cooling filter (82), opacity 24% to get the skin tone we want.

To add some nuances to his skin I'll use 2 color layers (Layer>>New fill layer>>Solid color) set to exclusion
#2F1E03 (dark brown)

#000609 (dark blue)

A bit foggy..but we're going to fix this with the final step:
Brightness/contrast layer (Layer>>New adjustment layer>>Brightness/contrast)
brightness: -2
contrast: +23

And we're done!

Another example with the same technique:
I made
from

(I skipped the multiply/soft light bases, though)

Hope it's useful. Don't hesitate to ask if you have any doubts and be creative, the coloring changes from pic to pic and you'll have to play with the layers and opacities ;)
