So can I just say that I'm loving all the backlash against prop 8.
All the vandalism, sending white powder to Mormon churches, while it's probably hurting the cause - the dark side of me is kinda enjoying it.
I also appreciate the face that Catholic and Mormon churches are claiming they are "suffering religious intolerance" or that opposers of prop 8 are "disrespecting the will of the voters" - UH OKAY.
Was the million man march disrespecting the will of America to oppress black people too?
I usually try to weigh both sides of an argument, even if I feel so strongly about one side. But in this case, it's really hard to see the other's point of view. They keep claiming that they are pro-gay but just anti-gay marriage. It's not a time where those two things can be mutually exclusive. You can't claim to have no problem with a group of people and then say that you don't think they have the same rights as you do - based on some imaginary concept of what a marriage should be. That makes you a hippocrite and a bigot; While it may very well be the case that people may not outwardly hate gay people and are just uncomfortable about the whole idea of same sex couples - I think it is a legitimate concern because it is changing something you were comfortable with - the bottom line is that things have to change for people to be equal because people aren't equal right now. Not just LGBT, even women are still payed less than men, racial minorities still get mistreated. And I think the main issue is that people are either allowing religious to make these choices for them because they're afraid of these changes or that they hate a group of people and use religious to justify it.
I'm also loving the activism that organized so quickly over the internet. To those who may think this is disrespecting the will of the voters - this is the will of the voters. The thing passed by like 5% or something - is your half the only side that deserves a voice?
In other words, I don't approve the backlash against the churches, I can say that they kind of deserve it. You dug your own grave now lie in it, and don't bitch about being treated unequally because people are boycotting your ass. How would you feel if you found out your dentist was anti-Mormon, would you still feel comfortable going?
Oh yeah, and the more statements coming from the Mormon church, the more it really does sound like a cult. People who hold positions like "First Presidency" and "Council of Twelve" - uh mystery cult anybody?
