Clean Cave

I need to clean my room.

I could easily say this any day and have it be an objective truth as it is most always drastically messy by anyone's standards, but the need is now magnified to the subject as it will come under the scrutiny of my family tomorrow at Thanksgiving.

It is a strange compulsion of mine to make mess, mainly because I actually love to clean - I find it therapeutic and mentally regenerating. Organizing, however, is a dizzying cave. Just as with organizing, it is difficult to navigate a cave without a plan or map of some sort. Indecisiveness and deliberation lead you to a plummeting death while unwanted but supposedly necessary items for your life poke up out of the floor like obnoxious stalagmites. And this cave is the pit of the Mountain of Clean. You can scrub and vacuum your way up the trail to the peak, but unless you've dug your way around in the Cave of Organization, it's all going to collapse.

My strategy for navigating the cave, is to throw away everything that looks boring. The more crap you have to organize, the deeper the cave goes, and the more gems and cool rock formations and terrific crevices the map will highlight for you with confusing symbols. I don't care how pretty that one earring is, or how artistically abstract it looks in the pile of the 20 other one earrings, because in the Cave of Organization on the Mountain of Clean, it is a stalagmite and it is in my way. Move over beautiful lumps of mess, I have a peak to reach.
