Kevin Devine and Mike Skinner, his drummer, are pretty much the most fabulous men I've ever met. This includes Brand New, Ten Second Epic, Straylight Run.... EVERYONE.
So I go downtown to see Kevine Devine AKA GOD (it has been decided that the AKA GOD is necessary after the use of his name, but I will most likely get lazy and give up) playing at Lee's Palace. Not really 'see' so much as 'stand-outside-and-listen-to-him'. The show is 19+. I'm 17.
So I get to Lee's. There's a white van with a trailer parked outside, and I'm like.... "Sweet. I'ma get me some coffee at the Second Cup next door, and then figure out where I should stand." I walk into the Second Cup, and who is sitting there but OMFG KEVIN DEVINE. I go over and ask if it's him, and he smiles and nods, and introduces me to the guy he's with, which is Mike from The Goddamn Band. (It's Kevin Devine and The Goddamn Band. The name alone is indication of the AWESOME.) We talk a little, and they ask if I'm going to the show. I explain the situation.
Kevin's like, "There's nothing we can do?" And Mike says, "We'll try and sneak you in, don't worry."
AND THEY DID.
First, they got me to help with load-in, and let me hang around to help with the merch table set-up, and just whatever little bits I could do. During sound check, Kevin randomly broke into Jesus Christ by Brand New. So i'm kinda singing along a little and he smiles at me!
I had mentioned that I was interested in tour managing to Mike. So he calls me over, and he explains everything to me; he shows me what the sheets you get from the booking agency look like, the information you get from the venue... everything.
And when that failed, Mike told the guy running the thing, Gord, that I was his cousin. Still didn't work. So what do they do?
They try and sneak me in the back, through their dressing room. And Pablo, the opening band, was like, "Quick, get in, get in..." That didn't work either.
But after the show, I went through the dressing room to say goodbye to them, and Kevin and Mike were like, "Did you get in?" When I said no, they were so apologetic, and they hugged me when I told them I'd heard it by standing out back.
Gord offered to get me into the bar they were all going to, but I had to catch the subway home. I got more hugs and a free signed poster, and smiles from everyone.
In the interrim of helping with load-in and trying to sneak-in the back, I got to go out for dinner with Will from Pablo. We had sushi, and the waiter thought we were a couple. He stepped on my foot accidentally and called me babe, and was also really fucking nice to me the whole time.
So dudes... if you ever hear that Kevin Devine AKA GOD is playing in a town near you... it's totally worth your money. They sounded great, even from outside the venue, and they're really nice people. If anyone deserves anything good, it's them.
