I have been bothered recently with ignorant people. Its recently been in random places in random situations such as last night when I was studying at the SCC (trying to study) I couldn't help but to hear this conversation between this girl and a guy that was sitting at the other end of the table. They were talking about one of thier friends and how she went to fish camp and apparently it was one of their best friends that they were talking about. So the guy says "Yeah and when she got back, she got off the bus with these two black guys and was hugging them"
So I am sitting and thinking to myself....I am not bothered that he said "black guy" but It was the way he said it, as if black people were a disease or something as if its wrong to be with a black person. After he said that I noticed the girl chuckled and then they glanced toward me but I didnt even give them the time of day because I am pretty sure they saw the look on my face. I am also sick of people thinking that all black people are grouped as being "ghetto" because that is definetly not true. I have been around diverse group of people since middle school and even into high school and I know a lot of very smart and well spoken african americans, asians and hispanic people in particular some of my friends that I have been knowing since middle school. I personally think that people have their own view of what "ghetto" is. What is being ghetto? Why is it always coined as a term to represent black people? Is it because of steroetyping? I could be wrong about this but I think that some people to a certain extent degrade african american people and their performance potential. Why do you think a majority of African Americans cannot speak proper English? I think It has to do with our roots in slavery in America. All blacks were not given a proper education or they were denided a quality education and I think that has been the cause of African American culture to be "not as well educated" However; that is not exactly the case now and minorities (hispanic, asian, african american) are progressing and are achieving higher levels of education. I always get this question from people..."Why don't you speak like your people" or "Why don't you act ghetto." Then thats when I ask them; What is Ghetto? I act the way I do because this is who I am and I enjoy speaking english and not slang. I will admit that my grammar is not the best in the world but I will do my best to correct myself when I can. I think I am not going to let it bother me because I know who I am and I know that I am just a capable of doing anything as much as anyone else is. Another thing about racism is that I don't believe that such a thing exsist and truthfully it doesn't. It is a culturally made way of organizing people and there isnt musch biological evidence for racism. In my Anthropology class we discussed how late anthropoligist tried to classify people by their race and there research and work is wrong and doesn't have any merit because race is just a cultural thing.
When Its all said and done; We are all human beings but we come from different ethnicities and experiences and that is what makes us different. I am happy to be who I am.
[Now that I have let that all out on to the Happy News]
