Is the Minor Planet Center the centre of the universe?

Dec 15, 2008 11:12

I never seem to find the time to blog the things I want to, which is annoying me recently, but such is life. This will just be a quick rant, inspired I hope by a misquote or something out of context... but possibly not. A group of Bulgarian astronomers have just found a new asteroid (2008 WN96), which is great. But what's annoyed me is a quote from the Minor Planet Center:

The center said the 2008 WN96 will probably be the last asteroid discovered in Bulgaria as the three scientists will start working on a new long-term project sponsored by the U.S. government in the beginning of 2009.

Surely they didn't really say something so stupid? OK, these guys are obviously very good at what they do, but to imply nobody from Bulgaria will ever be able to discover an asteroid ever again? That's just ridiculous. Grr.
