Body and Appearance
1. Describe the character's height and build. Is she heavyset, thin, short, rangy?
Azula is a slender young woman, probably taking after her mother. Despite that, she has rather impressive strength. She stands around 5'6", although she'll probably get taller - she's only fourteen, after all.
2. How old is she?
Fourteen years, probably getting close to fifteen.
3. Describe her posture. Does she carry herself well or does she slouch?
Azula always has good posture. Always. She carries herself straight and proud, like any good member of the royal family.
4. How is her health? Is she fit or out of shape? Any illnesses or conditions? Any physical disabilities?
She's at (or very nearly at) peak physical condition for someone of her age. She's incredibly quick and fit and suffers from no illness of the body (some would say that she suffers from illness of the mind, though).
5. How does she move? Is she clumsy, graceful, tense, fluid?
Azula moves with an easy, predatory grace most of the time. She's been trained since childhood to act as such and it shows.
6. How attractive is this character physically? How does she perceive herself in the mirror?
By all accounts, Azula seems to an attractive (if not striking) teenage girl. She tends to see herself as beautiful and perfect in every way and thinks everyone else should see her like that as well.
7. Describe her complexion. Dark, light, clear, scarred?
Her complexion is light and unblemished by any scars. That's Zuzukins' job.
8. Describe her hair: color, texture, style.
Her hair is a dark brown, beautiful and well-kept. It's very long when she lets it down, reaching to her waist. However, most of the time she keeps it up and exquisitely styled in a sort of top knot. She also has rather distinctive bangs, which tend to frame her face.
9. What color are her eyes?
A rather beautiful gold-yellow color.
10. Does the character have any other noteworthy features?
Not really.
11. What are her chief tension centers?
I want to say her back or shoulders.
12. What is the character's wardrobe like? Casual, dressy, utilitarian? Bright colors, pastels, neutrals? Is it varied, or does she have six of the same suit?
Azula typically dresses in ornate but comfortable Fire Nation armor and military uniform. Despite being very expensive, her outfits tend to have enough room for her to move around in them and provide at least some form of protection. Colors are usually shades of red, orange, black, and yellow.
For more casual occasions or when she's not in the field, she trends towards expensive-looking robes.
13. Do her clothes fit well? Does she seem comfortable in them?
She looks exquisite in them (they're all tailored) and doesn't seem the least bit discomforted.
14. Does she dress the same on the job as she does in her free time? If not, what are the differences?
She typically sticks to her military uniform, although she has been known to wear robes, swim-wear or more casual dresses when she wants to blend in.
15. You knew it was coming: Boxers, briefs or commando?
Tough question. Fortunately, the answer is none of the above and I'd probably find it hard to describe.
Speech
1. What does this character's voice sound like? High-pitched, deep, hoarse?
Azula's voice is usually even, although it tends to get a bit higher-pitched when she's angry.
2. How does she normally speak? Loud, soft, fast, evenly? Does she talk easily, or does she hesitate?
She usually speaks very calmly and matter-of-factly. She doesn't speed up or slow-down - everything moves according to her own speed and you will damn well like it or else. When angered, her voice tends to rise and she's been known to have outbursts from time to time.
3. Does the character have a distinct accent or dialect? Any individual quirks of pronunciation? Any, like, you know, verbal tics?
No verbal tics or distinct dialects or accents.
4. What language/s does she speak, and with how much fluency?
Whatever language they happen to speak in Avatar-verse.
5. Does she switch languages or dialects in certain situations?
Nope.
6. Is she a good impromptu speaker, or does she have to think about her words?
She's an excellent impromptu speaker. She can make an inspiring (and terrifying) speech on the spot.
7. Is she eloquent or inarticulate? Under what circumstances might this change?
She's very eloquent and will use this eloquence to her advantage. There have only been one or two situations when this changes and that's usually when she's incoherent with rage.
Mental and Emotional
1. How intelligent is this character? Is she book-smart or street-smart?
She's incredibly intelligent, both in the book and street sense. However, her street-smarts only extends to military or diplomatic situations - thrust onto an level playing field with someone, she's a bit out of her depth. By which I mean she has very little patience or understanding of social norms.
2. Does she think on her feet, or does she need time to deliberate?
She tends to think very well on her feet and is also excellent at long-term planning. The two aren't mutually exclusive.
3. Describe the character's thought process. Is she more logical, or more intuitive? Idealistic or practical?
She thinks of herself as practical, mixed with a bit of Fire Nation idealism and nationalism. She tends toward logical thought, although she also has been known to simply go with her instincts. She's adroit at thinking both in and outside the box.
4. What kind of education has the character had?
She's had an excellent (although deeply biased) education from her Fire Nation tutors. She's knowledgeable on a variety of subjects and is well-learned, at least for her world. She's literate and can write.
5. What are her areas of expertise? What, if anything, is she interested in learning more about?
Her areas of expertise tend to be military strategy and tactics, as well as heavy-handed diplomacy and outright manipulation. She's also a master Firebender and unarmed hand-to-hand combatant. She's always interested in learning more if it benefits her, regardless of the subject.
6. Is she an introvert or an extrovert?
Definitely an extrovert.
7. Describe the character's temperament. Is she even-tempered or does she have mood swings? Cheerful or melancholy? Laid-back or driven?
She's... usually even-tempered. However, when roused to anger she'll snap. She's generally cheerful, if not outright filled with malicious glee and is one of the more driven characters in the series.
8. How does she respond to new people or situations? Is she suspicious, relaxed, timid, enthusiastic?
Polite curiosity describes it well. She wants to know about them and how they might be useful to her. This quickly turns to indifference if they aren't.
9. Is she more likely to act, or to react?
She is more likely to react - she likes having the initiative.
10. Which is her default: fight or flight?
Fight, although she's not above running away if she feels a fight is turning against her.
11. Describe the character's sense of humor. Does she appreciate jokes? Puns? Gallows humor? Bathroom humor? Pranks?
Her sense of humor is malicious, to say the least. She finds entertainment in other people's suffering and other dark humor. She trends towards dry wit. However, she has very little concept of "regular" humor.
12. Does the character have any diagnosable mental disorders? If yes, how does she deal with them?
Arguably she exhibits traits of
Narcissistic personality disorder, but she's never really diagnosed, for obvious reasons. She is something of a sociopath and under stress may exhibit extreme paranoia. Hallucinations may also be involved.
13. What moments in this character's life have defined her as a person?
1. Her father's ascension to the throne and the exile of her mother affected her more deeply than she cares to admit. The idea that her mother thought she was a monster (and then was just gone) left an impact on her psyche. It also meant that there was no one to counter the influence that her father left upon her, molding her into the sociopath of a princess that she is today.
2. The capture of Ba-Sing-Se was and is to this date her largest achievement. She took the giant fortress city nearly single-handed and has earned her much glory and respect in her homeland. It is something she immensely proud of.
3. Meeting Mai an Ty Lee. These "friends" are perhaps her closest companions and two people she believes she can rely on without fail. She will/would be proven wrong on this, which would help start her descent into rampant paranoia and eventual nervous breakdown.
14. What does she fear?
She would claim that she fears nothing. However, she fears being a failure and her father abandoning her. She fears being "alone" and ultimately fears death, to an extent.
15. What are her hopes or aspirations?
To become the Fire Lord and rule the world!
16. What is something she doesn't want anyone to find out about her?
That she really does hurt over her mother calling her a monster. Deep down. Hell, even she doesn't really know.
Relationships
1. Describe this character's relationship with her parents.
Complicated. Very complicated. She was her father's daughter and his favored child. However, she was also brought up by him to only respect power, to trample others underneath her and to do whatever it takes to win. Her mother caught her nascent sadism and cruelty at an early age and despite her attempts to stop it, her father's support of it countered any attempts to teach her otherwise.
Her mother also called her a monster once (or so Azula claims) and that has affected Azula's psyche far more than she thinks it has.
2. Does the character have any siblings? What is/was their relationship like?
She has one brother, namely Zuko. They don't get along at all. She's always taunted and teased and tormented him for a variety of reasons and they've always been in competition. However, she's always been better than him at... well... everything and has been favored by their father. They have an intense rivalry of each other and Azula actually hates her brother deep down inside. There may be a glimmering of sibling love left over from when they were a normal family, but it's quickly being snuffed out by the conflict they always seem to be engaged in.
3. Are there other blood relatives to whom she is close? Are there ones she can't stand?
Her only other blood relative is her Uncle Iroh, who she simply thinks of as a senile old fuddy-duddy.
4. Are there other, unrelated people whom she considers part of her family? What are her relationships with them?
She doesn't really have anyone else she considers "family".
5. Who is/was the character's best friend? How did they meet?
Her best "friends" (although it may be more due to fear than any real affection) are Mai and Ty Lee. She finds them useful and they apparently tolerate traveling with and enabling her, either out of fear or loyalty.
6. Does she have other close friends?
Nope.
7. Does she make friends easily, or does she have trouble getting along with people?
Azula doesn't make "friends". She only gets to know people she thinks might be useful and ultimately discards them when they're no longer worth anything to her. Suffice to say she has trouble getting along with people at times, although she doesn't seem to care that much.
8. Which does she consider more important: family or friends?
Family, ultimately. She's loyal to her father.
9. Is the character single, married, divorced, widowed? Has she been married more than once?
Single and will stay that way for the foreseeable future.
10. Is she currently in a romantic relationship with someone other than a spouse?
Nope.
11. Who was her first crush? Who is her latest?
If she had a first crush, it's unknown. However, her latest seemed to be a crush on a young man named Chan, the son of a Fire Nation admiral. That lasted until she got way too overbearing. Then she burned down his house.
12. What does she look for in a romantic partner?
She's not that interested in romance - although judging from her one non-harmful social interaction, she looks for someone with power and ambition to match her own. Probably cruelty too.
13. Does the character have children? Grandchildren? If yes, how does she relate to them? If no, does she want any?
No children and at current doesn't plan on having any in the near future (although obviously she'd be expected to have heirs if she became Fire Lord).
14. Does she have any rivals or enemies?
The whole Gaang are her enemies at this point, although she and Zuko especially have it out for each other.
15. What is the character's sexual orientation? Where does she fall on the
Kinsey scale?
Judging from the show? I'd say a one or a two. However, she doesn't seem all that concerned with sex or relationships in general.
16. How does she feel about sex? How important is it to her?
It's a non-factor to her and not something she generally considers.
17. What are her turn-ons? Turn-offs? Weird bedroom habits?
Unknown. Probably something of a sadist though and completely the dominant partner in any situation she finds herself in. Might have a thing for fire.
Beliefs
1. Do you know your character's astrological (
zodiac of
choice) sign? How well does she fit type?
Head-canon says she was born during mid-summmer, probably in early August - this puts her as a Monkey in the Chinese zodiac and a Leo in the western zodiac. She fits some of the type well, other parts of it not so much. Toss-up, really.
2. Is this character religious, spiritual, both, or neither? How important are these elements in her life?
She doesn't seem to be very religious, although she acknowledges that spirits do exist and she has a healthy respect for them.
3. Does this character have a personal code of morals or ethics? If so, how did that begin? What would it take to compromise it?
She has no personal code. Her only hard rule seems to be to do what's best for her and the Fire Nation (from her point of view).
4. How does she regard beliefs that differ from hers? Is she tolerant, intolerant, curious, indifferent?
She mildly tolerates ideas other than her own if they're not too far out there or she deems it harmless. However, if she thinks otherwise, she comes down on dissidence like a ton of bricks.
5. What prejudices does she hold? Are they irrational or does she have a good reason for them?
She thinks of nearly everyone as being below her in both social status and power. It's fairly irrational - she believes in the divine right of kings, after all.
Daily Life
1. What is the character's financial situation? Is she rich, poor, comfortable, in debt?
She's royalty an tends to be fabulously wealthy.
2. What is her social status? Has this changed over time, and if so, how has the change affected her?
She is a princess and hence royalty. She's been this way all her life.
3. Where does she live? House, apartment, trailer? Is her home her castle or just a place to crash? What condition is it in? Does she share it with others?
At home, she lives in the Imperial Palace in the lap of luxury. It's maintained by a small army of servants and guarded by an actual army. She shares it not only with her father and her servants, but also a variety of courtiers, hangers-on, etc.
4. Besides the basic necessities, what does she spend her money on?
Anything she wants, really.
5. What does she do for a living? Is she good at it? Does she enjoy it, or would she rather be doing something else?
She's a princess and is a very good one, or so she says. Manual labor is for servants, though. Her job is to rule and crush the enemies of the Fire Nation beneath her heels.
6. What are her interests or hobbies? How does she spend her free time?
She's typically training or studying strategy, although she apparently enjoys spending a bit of time out of doors and reading.
7. What are her eating habits? Does she skip meals, eat out, drink alcohol, avoid certain foods?
She does her best to eat well (healthy body, healthy mind), but she's not above skipping meals if she has to.
