Commentary: Tired of paying taxes? Tally your 'private' cost once
By John Lemberger
I've always believed the sum of the whole is greater than the individual parts. That's why I'm an advocate for a progressive tax system that allows us to pool our resources to acquire goods and services we couldn't afford otherwise.
THIS I COULD GET BEHIND, IF I GOT TO PICK WHERE ALL OR MOST OF THE MONEY WENT.
There are those who disagree with me. They claim taxes are a bad deal, and they could best decide how to spend their money.YUP i WOULD BE ONE OF THEM.
Who makes the better claim?
As they say, "the proof of the pudding is in the eating."
What do I get for my state and local tax dollars? Well, my wife and I paid about $9,000 in property, income and sales tax for 2006.
Let's consider what it would it cost me to purchase all of the goods and services that $9,000 chips in for from the private sector over one year.
I have one child in public high school, and one attends a public university. If my son were to attend Oshkosh Lourdes High School, I would be looking at a tuition payment of $4,100 plus another $250 registration fee (Source: Lourdes' website.) Private colleges like Ripon College run about $29,000 per year.
YUP PRIVET SCHOOLS ARE MORE EXPENSIVE, BUT YOU LEFT OUT THE SIN TAX AND LOTTO THAT GO TO FUND PUB. SCHOOLS, THAT MAKES FOR A DAMN SITE MORE $ GOING INTO SCHOOLS THAN JUST YOUR PROP/INCOME TAXS. AND A GOOD ALTERNITIVE IS HOME SCHOOLING, WHAT A CONSEPT- TEACHING THINGS TO YOUR OWN KIDS! OR SETTING UP A CO OP OF PEOPLE THAT WORK AND GIVEING ONE OF THEM THE RESPONSIBLEITE TO TEACH YOUR CHILDREN AND PAY THEM.
AS FOR COLLEGE YUP IT COSTES $ AND IF THERE WEREN'T GRANTS FROM THE GOVERMENT, THEN YOU WOULD HAVE TO GET A LOAN JUST LIKE MOST PEOPLE.
Clearly, on education alone I'm ahead, but what about more mundane things?
Garbage pickup would cost about $200 per year. I estimate another $150 annually for snow removal on the street in front of my house. For water, you'll need a reverse osmosis system. Figure several hundred dollars per year for filters, and that's after the cost of drilling your own well, unless of course you're not afraid to drink unfiltered well water in Oshkosh! Then there's the cost of cleaning up your wastewater before dumping it. This may seem like an extravagance to you, but your neighbors are going to insist on it. This will require a septic system. According to my Internet search, pumping your septic tank will cost about another $300 per year.
WHAT ABOUT THE PEOPLE WHO ALREADY PAY FOR TRASH PICKUP? AND SNOW REMOVEL? OR DON'T NEED EITHER ONE?
Of course you'll want security.
NOPE GOT THAT COVERED. i FEEL CONFADENT THAT A GOOD RELATIONSHIP WITH MY NEBORIGHS IS PLENTY OF PROTECHTION, MUCH BETTER THAN A PRESON THAT i DON'T KNOW AND WHO DOSEN'T GIVE A DAMN ABOUTME OR WHAT HAPPENS TO MY STUFF.
A private officer will cost you, at a minimum, $25/hour (that's courtesy of GuardstoGo.com). And you'll want 24/7 protection. So, do the math. It's $219,000. Of course you could get together with nine of your neighbors and cut that to $21,900. But wouldn't that be pooling resources like with taxes?
BUT i DON'T GET THIS NOW. NO COP SITS ON MY STREET 24/7 (THANK FUCKING GOD) YOU DID HOW EVER FORGET THE ONE THAT i COULDN'T ARGE WITH FIRE FIGHTERS, YES THEY COULD BE VOLENTERE, BUT THEY STILL NEED GEAR AND i GLADLY WOULD GIVE FOR THIS SERVICE
If your security guard catches somebody breaking into your house, you'll have to hire a judge and jury to try the fellow. But worse still, if they manage to convict the guy, where are you going to incarcerate him? It costs about $30,000 per year to put someone in prison. Even if you chain him up in your basement, you still will have to feed him. Figure $2,600 per year. You'll also want fire protection. Rural/Metro provides that service at about $2 per $1,000 of property value. For a $100,000 house figure $200 per year.
THIS IS SOLVED BY CORPRAL PUNISHMENT. FLOG THAT BITCH AND BE DUN WITH HIM/HER. AND YES YOU DO IT YOUR SELF. AND YES YOU AND YOUR NEIGHBORS DESIDE WHAT HAPPENED AND WHAT THE PUNISHMENT SHOULD BE, OR HAVE EASY TO UNDERSTAND LAWS THAT SAY B/E = 6 LASHES
If my math is right, I'm at $58,700 for buying necessary services from the private sector.
BUT AT WHAT PRICE?
That's quite a bit more than the $9,000 I'm paying in taxes.
There are, however, many other things your tax dollars provide you: *Parks(ADDMISHOIN?), libraries(FEES), child support services(WHAT IF YOU DON'T HAVE KIDS, OR ALREDY PAY FOR THEM?[CHARADE]), *emergency services(VOLANTIRE/DONATIONS), *airport(PAY FOR YOU TICKET), veterans services(NO ARMY NO VETS), human services(CHARADE), county highway maintenance(TOLLS), public health department(WHAT NOW?), *coroner( SHIT i CAN TELL SOMEONE IS DEAD, OR PAY HIM YOURSELF IF YOU NEED HIM, i NEVER HAVE), *clerk of courts(NEEDS TO FIND ANOTHER JOB), Park View Health Center([I'M GUESSING CLINICK] CHARADE), UW-Fox Valley(?), University Extension Services(PAY YOURSELF), natural resources protection(DONATION), wardens(DON'T NEED THEM), *register of deeds(MIGHT NEED TO PAY A LAWER), land and water conservation projects(VOLANTIRE/DONATIONS), scholarships( I THINK HE MENT GRANTS), and more. Tax-supported, not-for-profit, universal health care is one more thing we need(BUT DON'T AND MOST PROBLY WON'T EVER HAVE).([*] THINGS ARE THINGS WE PAY AS WE USE, COULDN'T WE JUST PAY A LITTLE MORE?)
Please don't misunderstand. I'm not advocating that everything should be provided through the public sector. I'm not a communist. After all, who wants to drive a Trabant?
I'm a pragmatist who believes we should use whichever sector -- private or public -- works best. And I believe those who think they can do better without any tax-supported services are just plain wrong.
i THINK THE MONEY I ERNE SHOULD GO TO WHAT i DEEM FIT. NOT WHAT SOME OTHER PERSON THINKS IS RIGHT. AS MANY OF YOU KNOW MY SON IS AUTISTIC, AND GETS SERIVERS THAT I COULDN'T AFORD FORM THE STATE, FOR THIS i AM VERY GRATEFUL, BUT COULDN'T THE SAME THING BE ACHIVED THOUGHT A PROGRAM THROUGHT A COLLDGE/MASTERS/PHD PROGRAM? AS PART OF THE CORICKULUM? FOR FREE OR MUCH CHEEPER? AND NOT COST PEOPLE WHO DON'T NEED THE SERVICES? i BLEIVE IN WELFARE, PEOPLE NEED HELP SOME TIMES, COULDN'T THIS BE ACOMPLISHED BY DONATION/FUND RASEING?
The proof is in the pudding.
