12. Candy
"You the one I sent for?" Domino was staring down a somewhat nervous grunt. It was clearly his first time at this.
"Er.. yes, ma'am. What was it you wanted?"
Domino reached into a folder and pulled out a photograph. "This."
"...You called me here to get you that?" he asked, perplexed.
"Yes. It's quite urgent. If I don't get some right away, I may just lose it," Domino explained, starting to feel the first tinges of insanity closing in.
"But it's..."
"I don't care. You know where to get it. I've seen you with it too. Now, go find me some. Here's the money."
The grunt continued staring in confusion. She seemed desperate enough. That had to be a bad thing.
"NOW."
"Oh- yes'm" Terrified, he scurried off.
Domino hoped he wouldn't take too long. It'd been forever since her last Pocky fix. And the little sticks were calling her name right now.
13. Demon
"You call that project a miracle?"
Fuji's ex-wife was staring into the monstrosity in the tank. He had invited her to see the lab, hoping her seeing some of his work would entice her back to him. It wasn't seeming to work.
"Yes. If we can re-create a fossil, Maria, imagine what we can do with our daughter!" His face was lit up with happiness. "We could finally hold her again!" To Fuji's surprise, Maria's expression was one of horror, not joy.
"If she'd end up anything like that, I don't want to imagine it," she said. "Have you really been that blinded by money, Peter? To the point where you want to create these... these... abominations? For that... freak? Do you even KNOW what he's planning on doing with that... thing?"
Fuji suddenly turned defensive. "Maria, Giovanni's not a freak. He's just somewhat eccentric. And he told me he merely wants to share in the future of science with me. Why else would he give me such generous funding?" He reached for Maria's hand. She pulled it away quickly. "Maria..."
"I don't want you doing this to our Amber, Peter. That thing in there... you said it was supposed to be a clone of Mew. It's not Mew at all. It's just some... some demon. I don't want Amber to end up a monster."
"Maria..."
"I'm not convinced, Peter. Goodbye."
Fuji watched, a tear in his eye, as his onetime love left the ruins.
His sadness only drove him deeper into his research, until the fateful day it awoke...
