YAY OMG I'm finally finished. This is part 2 of the two-parter that Nekou and I were working on. You should probably read part 1 that she wrote, if you already haven't, so you know what's going on...
47. Important
Nekou grumbled to herself as she wandered down the hallway towards Namba’s office, not at all happy with the predicament she was in. Damn that Ria…that sneaky, conniving…
Actually, she thought, if Kali hadn’t of been making snoo-snoo with Persian, she wouldn’t be in this situation anyways. As she had tried to explain to Ria, though, they were only acting on animal instincts. How was Kali supposed to deny the advances of a rich and (apparently) handsome Persian? And okay, even if he wasn’t the Van Darn of cats, he certainly had the power to make up for it.
Maybe it was all Hitoshi’s fault for getting ‘sick’ today. He totally could have sucked it up like a man and come into work.
“ Aargh…it doesn’t matter who’s fault this is. What matters is what I’ve gotta do to get out of it.” She told herself, stopping outside Namba’s door.
“ Professor…” she knocked on the door, which was open, as she walked inside and caught the doctor quickly closing a game of solitaire.
If Ria couldn’t get those papers, as manipulative as she is, Nekou thought to herself, then what am I going to do?
“ Nekou.” Namba whirled around, and she could tell he definitely loved his swivel chair. “ Did you finish cleaning those vials?”
“ Er…yes, sir. Mostly.” She added that last part under her breath, scanning the room with her eyes. She didn’t even really know what the hell she was looking for…and when she found it, wasn’t even sure she would really want to take it.
Of course, this was Team Rocket. People didn’t just go around doing the right thing for each other. If you parked a convertible in the parking garage, for instance, you could fully expect someone to take a knife to the canvas top and hotwire it the second it was out of your sight.
What had she expected Ria to do?
“ Oh, hey, Nekou, don’t worry about a thing. You’re secret’s safe with me. You know…I could even arrange a private romantic date for Kali and Persian. I make killer spaghetti, you know. Best friends forever!”
Nekou shook her head. No, that would never happen. But it would have been nice.
“ I’m going to visit the cafeteria now.” Namba stood, catching Nekou’s attention. “ I won’t need you until later this afternoon…I have some more experiments, and of course you’ll be on the clean-up crew.”
Normally that last part would have bothered Nekou, but she was living in the moment and right now, the professor was leaving his office.
How convenient.
“ Yes, sir.” She gave him a nod as he exited the office.
“ Hello, professorrrr!” Ria chirped in a singsong voice as she entered Sebastian’s office. He glanced up from his computer as she entered.
“ Thank you for knocking, Rianne.” The sarcasm was obvious, but he wasn’t being hostile in any way. It merely annoyed him when some people forgot their manners…certain young ladies in particular who seemed to barge into his office uninvited almost daily. “ I see that you don’t have what I asked for.”
“ Oh, that…” She said, taking a seat across from him and messing with the knick-knacks on his desk. “ …it’s being taken care of.”
“ It doesn’t look like it.”
“ You’ll have to trust me on this, sir.” She leaned across his desk. “ Don’t you trust me?”
He lazily looked up at her. Professionally, she usually always got the job done when he needed her to. She was good at what she did. Personally, however, although she was a likeable girl, and fairly easy to get along with, the answer was no, he didn’t trust her. No one in their right mind would.
“ No farther than I can throw you, my dear.”
She crossed her arms and huffed indignantly.
“ Well. Fine.” She stood. “ I guess I’ll have to get you your stupid papers then.”
He smirked. He knew that would get her out of his hair for a few minutes, at least.
Nekou hesitated for a moment as she rummaged through the papers on Namba’s desk. She wondered for a moment if he was paranoid enough to have cameras installed in his office…after all, this was the same man who believed Santa Claus was real and out to kill him every year.
But then again…it wasn’t like she worked for him everyday. So it didn’t really matter if he caught her after the deed was done. Or at least, that’s what she told herself in order to keep going with the ‘mission’.
“ What’s this?” she said aloud as she came across a manila envelope on the corner of his desk.
“DO NOT OPEN. TOP SECRET. NOT SUSPICIOUS IN ANY WAY.” Read the front of the envelope on huge, red letters.
Namba really wasn’t very good at keeping things a secret.
Nekou opened the envelope and scanned the papers. They looked to be a written report on some recent mission that had, by the looks of it, completely bombed. Not typically something you would be proud to show your boss. This must be it.
“ Now to find Ria.” She said quietly, sliding the envelope into her backpack, and left Namba’s office.
Not five minutes after Nekou had departed, Ria arrived at Namba’s office and attempted to barge in as she was infamous for doing. Alas, the door was locked.
She knocked.
“ Nekou? ….Nekou. Nekou!”
She wasn’t in there.
“ Damn it, girl, where did you go?!”
Had she even tried to get the papers?
After taking out her frustrations on the professor’s office door, Ria set out in hot pursuit of Nekou.
“ Come in.” Sebastian called to the knock on his door.
“ Good afternoon, professor.” Nekou greeted him, looking around. No Ria.
“ Nekou. I wouldn’t expect to see you here.” The professor smiled, straightening his posture.
“ I’m covering for Hitoshi today.” She explained.
“ I see, so you’re helping Namba today. Can I help you?”
“ Actually…er, I was hoping to find Ria in here.”
Sebastian arched an eyebrow.
“ Oh you were, were you?”
He sighed. The first place the agents were coming looking for her now was his office. He really had stop being so nice about her bugging him all the time.
Then he wondered…why would Nekou be looking for Ria?
“ If she’s not here, I’ll just-“
“ Hold on there, Nekou.” Sebastian got up from his desk.
It’s being taken care of.
He wondered…
“ You know, Rianne and Tyson are supposed to come in later this evening to do some work for me. I’ll be sure to see her again, why not let me take a message?”
“ Well, it’s not really a message, sir.” Nekou explained. “ It’s actually more of a…delivery.”
Sebastian smiled. His instincts had been right. He knew Ria far too well by this point in time.
“ You can leave your delivery here. I’ll be sure she gets it.”
Nekou paused. That wasn’t part of the deal…she took off her backpack and clutched it. If she didn’t let Ria deliver the papers, then Ria might just let the Meowth out of the bag, or Persian, rather, in this case, about Kali and Giovanni’s kitty.
“ I’m not sure I can do that.” She looked rather thoughtful as she tried to explain it to the professor. The problem was, she certainly couldn’t tell him a baldfaced lie. He had too much influence with Giovanni…things weren’t looking good either way. Nekou cursed to herself.
“ You’re not doing something you aren’t supposed to do, are you, my dear?”
“ Of course not!”
He leaned in close all of a sudden, making Nekou slightly uncomfortable, she had to admit, as if he had some kind of a big secret he needed to tell her.
“ Did Ria make you get something from Namba?” he said quietly.
She paused. He knew?
“…I…well…”
“ The answer is yes, then?”
“ Nekou!” about that time, the office door burst open and Ria stood there, pointing finger at the other girl. It was rather comedic.
“ Will you knock, please?” Sebastian crossed his arms and spoke with an irritated tone, although inside he was a little amused with the girls’ antics. He wondered exactly what he’d missed this morning.
“ Sorry, sir. But it’s important that I have a word with my friend Nekou, here.”
“ Anything you have to say in front of her, surely you can say in front of me.”
Ria paused.
Neither Ria or Nekou said anything, and Sebastian’s smirk grew wider. Then, he turned to Nekou.
“ Would you be kind enough to hand over those papers now? I’ve been waiting for days to have a look at them.”
Ria’s jaw nearly dropped to the floor, and then she shot an accusatory glance at Nekou.
“ Hey, I kept my end of the deal. I didn’t say anything!” Nekou frowned, handing the professor the envelope.
“ She’s right, she didn’t have to.” Sebastian opened the package. “ You’re about as predictable as the History channel, Rianne. You should be ashamed, taking credit for the hard work you’ve milked out of someone else.”
Ria sulked.
“ Um, aren’t we bad guys?” she asked. “ I cheat…I get paid for it.”
“ A lady would still have some morals among her fellow criminals. Where’s your sense of camaraderie?” he smiled again as he slid the papers back into the envelope. “ Nekou.”
“ Yes, sir?” she straightened.
“ Thank you. You really have no idea how much of a favor this is. If you ever need, say, a recommendation…all you have to do is ask.”
“ Er…thank you, sir.”
“ As for you,” he turned to Ria, “…I’ll bother with you later. Now both of you get out of here,” he turned his back and went back to his computer, “…I have some work to do.”
After they had exited Sebastian’s office, Nekou turned to Ria. All she would have had to do was say something to the professor about Kali and Persian, and word would have surely gotten back to Giovanni.
“ You didn’t say anything.” She arched an eyebrow.
Ria glanced at Nekou out of the corner of her eye and smiled, then went back to inspecting her fingernails.
“ Did you think I was going to?”
“ What?”
“ Whatever. I was only playing head games with you…hell, someone’s bound to find out about this sooner or later.” She motioned ahead, and Nekou turned to see Kali in front of her.
“ Um…thanks, I guess.” She frowned. “…sorry things didn’t work out the way you wanted with the professor.”
“ It’s cool.” Ria had already started to walk away, but stopped to check her reflection in the mirror. “ He’ll like me again tomorrow. It’s hard not to.”
She wiggled her hips and winked at her own reflection. Nekou, meanwhile, rolled her eyes. Wow. Once Ria was out of sight, she looked down at Kali.
“ You.”
Kali cocked her head, and was soon face-to-face with an open backpack.
“ In the bag, now. I think you’ve caused enough trouble for one day.”
She headed back Namba’s way. She never had finished cleaning those vials…
Nekou sighed. She couldn’t WAIT for Hitoshi to hear about all of this.
And now, on a completely unrelated note, I'm going to also post up a picture I drew of Max. You know Max. I've written about him a few times here before (Dr. Sebastian's son remember LOL). In case you were wondering what he looks like.
