This popped into my head this morning while I was walking back from Biology. It's rated PG-13, to be safe. It's kind of dark. That's your warning.
93. Smile
It wasn't often that Giovanni would go into the lab. He needed to get in touch with Sebastian, though, and he wasn't answering the phone.
Upon his unannounced arrival, he had been saluted and directed to the room in which the head professor was currently working.
" Professor Sebastian." Giovanni made a special attempt to make the displeasure obvious in his voice. " You told me about Project Rayquaza months ago, but I've seen no progress thus far. This is the second time you've promised me a legendary beast. Where is it?"
" I've been rather busy."
He glanced over his shoulder as he responded, smiling the whole time. It was the same disturbed smile that he always wore, but something about him, perhaps it was just the eerie lighting in the laboratory, was unnerving to the Team Rocket boss.
Is that oil?
There was a spot of something dark just underneath the professor's left eye, but he didn't seem to notice. Or maybe he just didn't care.
" What is that you're working on over there?"
That smile seemed to get a little wider before Sebastian turned back to his work without answering.
" I plan to leave for Hoenn on Monday."
Though it would have been proper to leave, Giovanni stayed despite Persian's insistant meowing as it watched the master from the door. Such concentration. It was almost as if Sebastian lived to do what he was doing right at that moment. They had known each other for much of college, and he could only remember the present-day professor practically living in the science building.
" Sebastian. Have you always known you wanted to go into science?"
Before he answered, Sebastian's right arm jerked as if the thing he had been working on broke, and Giovanni heard a sickening pop. Perhaps he didn't want to see what was on the table, after all. He also remembered the head Rocket doctor's constant complaining about the strict ethics code.
Of course, that had been part of their deal. He had come to work for Giovanni under the condition that there were no restrictions on his research; Sebastian would be the only one to judge what was humane and what was not as far as his experiments were concerned.
" Actually, I wanted to be an English major."
" What made you change your mind?"
There was another pause as Sebastian pulled some kind of thin blanket from under the table.
"...once in biology lab, I accidentally got a Weedle so addicted to nicotine that it's heart burst." he turned finally. The thing on the table, now haphazardly wrapped in a sheet and held in one of the doctor's arms, was now clear to the visitor. It had been a Vulpix, but the previously white sheet now saturated with red liquid and the spatter on the front of Sebastian's jacket indicated that it was no more. " I realized then that I wanted to test the limits of all living things."
The sadism in his voice was enough to give even Giovanni the creeps.
