So here's an idea--character discussion! We'll pick a character every so often and discuss them! Won't that be fun?
*crickets*
Well tough.
Anyway, because I have a snazzy new icon recent bent for this character, I'll start us off with Buson. Attilla. Sunglasses Guy. Blondie. Whatever you wanna call him.
The impression I always got from him was similar to Reno from Final Fantasy 7. He works and he's damn good at his job, but he likes to kick back and goof off when he's not on duty. Unfortunately, unlike Reno, we never actually see Buson off duty, so I'm not really sure where I get this from.
One of the biggest things I've noticed is that people tend to think he's a moron. But what do they base this on? He's the one who seems to be in charge of the computer work between the two of them, and let's face it, you don't work for the science department if you don't know your shit. Sure he's loud and crass, but that's not the same thing at all (I can totally picture him in school holding up his report card and shouting "HONOR ROLL, BITCHES! YEEEEAH!").
Also something unusual I've noticed is the tendency to make him a closet softie. Sure we all laughed when 4Kids did it with his line about Caterpies, but it's us at R100 who decided he should have a Blissey (usually involving him raising it from a Happiny), and the good folks at East 9 who give him Jigglypuff and Buneary (and sometimes a Shaymin), and they're unlikely to have seen any of the dubs.
Contrast to Bashou, who recalls the gameverse Rockets when he says that Pokémon are meant to serve humans, something Buson doesn't react to either way (also I get the distinct impression that Bashou thinks that most humans are there to serve the Rockets too, but that's for a different discussion).
And heck, let's go with our ficverse stuff. In mine, by way of ket_makura who came up with most of it, his dad was a corrupt cop which led to his distrust of the law, he's left-handed, he wears the sunglasses because of photosensitivity due to being hit with a flash-bang bomb on an early mission (they were a gift from Bashou), he has no gag reflex (I will not explain how this comes up because you should be able to figure it out), he loves video games and cheesy sci-fi movies, and one of his early duties after becoming a Rocket was to work at a team-run ranch (yes, partial dub canon. I don't care. Buson as a ranchhand is a fantastic image no matter what crap it was surrounded by).
