“They’ll kill him all right. We don’t have any time to lose.”
“We’re stuck!” I shouted, rattling my right arm.
“Yeah. But this cell is made for one person, kiddo. These manacles are supposed to take only one person, but this type’s the only kind they’ll trust to hold us- see? It locks onto your wrist and expands or shrinks if you try to wiggle out of it. And you can’t pick it either. So they put one on you-“ she waved a hand at me, “-and one on me.” She held up her left arm. “Pass me that butcher knife of yours.”
I fumbled with my left hand and passed her the collapsible cleaver. “Good thing they didn’t have time to search us. Are you going to cut the chain off?” I asked hopefully.
She glared at me. “This stuff’s all made of the same material! Don’t be stupid, kid. What’s the point of making super-techie arm-cuffs if your chains are going to suck?
I frowned. “What are you doing?”
“Your father and I, we once were talking about what we would do for each other. What we would sacrifice. What we would put down for the other. The bets are off now, kid. Looks like it’s come to that.” She gripped the cleaver and regarded it with an eye. “Hmm. Good enough. Might hurt a bit.”
“As long as we get out of here- what are you doing?”
Ma’m held up the cleaver and put it against her upper arm. “I said, I’m going to save him. Kick those flunkies clear out of here. “Don’t talk to me, kid. I’m busy.”
“WHAT ARE YOU DOING?”
She looked down at me and tested the blade of the knife against her skin. “Cutting off my arm.”
