I tagged. ^^; Sorry for always taking it for granted that someone else would do it.
51. Childhood
“ I’m Ria.”
The man on the other side of the desk was looking straight at her but seemed to completely ignore what she said. It was extremely unnerving. After a minute that seemed like an hour, she began to fidget as he studied her.
“ You’re a child.”
Her jaw dropped at his rude disregard. He shook his head and went back to his computer.
“ Excuse me, sir,” she put great effort into remaining calm, “ but Giovanni seems to think I’m every bit as capable as any other agent here.”
“ Oh, is that what he told you?” the response was apathetic. The professor finally did glance up at her. “ You realize it’s highly unusual that someone your age would be wearing that uniform. How old are you, exactly?”
“ Eighteen.”
He smirked.
“ We’re certainly not going to get off on the right foot if you lie to me.”
He swiveled around in his desk chair to face her directly now, leaning back with a sneer and awaiting her truthful response.
“ Fifteen.” She admitted with obvious reluctance. “ I’m supposed to be taking the place of my father, if you require further explanation, sir.”
“ Oh, I’ve read all about you.” He said. “ Along with the note Giovanni attached.”
“ Note?” she asked, narrowing her eyes. She knew they’d probably sent her file over, but what kind of personal comments had the boss made?
The professor grabbed a manila folder off the top of a stack of paperwork and opened it on his desk.
“ Let’s see. ‘ I’ll be sending you the girl in the next week she is young I realize but we are in short supply of recruits at the moment, something something - oh, his handwriting is terrible,” the professor peered over the paper long enough to offer that tidbit, “ - trained some with her father in the field, she has great potential but god she needs more training and discipline, something illegible here, Sebastian do something with her you will be greatly compensated for your patience.’ That note, my dear.”
Ria wasn’t exactly sure how to react to it. God she needs more training and discipline? That certainly wasn’t what Giovanni had told her himself. It became apparent to her that he’d lied in order to motivate her to take on something she wasn’t even sure she’d been ready to be a part of.
I’m a pawn.
The fact that she’d been played with upset Ria, but even if she had been in the position to do anything about it too much had happened in the past week…she hardly even had the energy to be more defiant than the little she had been with the professor thus far.
“ Sir, you called for me?”
She came back to reality to realize that someone else was standing in Sebastian’s office now. She hadn’t even noticed him come in. He was a very tall man with brown hair, clad in the same silver uniform she was wearing. He, too, seemed to take minimal notice of her at first.
“ Your new assignment is right there.” Sebastian nodded towards Ria. “ Just as we discussed over the phone. I’m counting on you to take care of this, Tyson.”
The larger man nodded, still not looking at Ria. Sebastian winked at her, so quick and nonchalant that she had to wonder if she’d really seen him do it.
“ I’ll see you in a few weeks, after you’ve learned that Team Rocket is more than running around in the field with daddy.”
He dismissed them with a wave of his hand.
“ Is that all?” she asked quietly.
“ Welcome to reality. ” Tyson answered when Sebastian shrugged, making apparent that he wasn’t going to. “ Let’s go.”
