What do you do to the sixteen year old who elaborately and at great length mocks the severely depressed and potentially learning disabled student? I am so deeply annoyed, but am afraid that if I call attention to the mocking it will swell, or at very least embarrass the victim. All I can do is cut him off once I realize where he is going with certain comments. Home has been called for many many things, so this would be the least of the bully's parents worries. The bully comes from a relatively good home, is popular, a good athlete, and relatively bright- but he doesn't do much at school except pester, wander the halls, and get slightly over fifty percent.

The bully spent half my English class building up to the punchline before I realized where he was going with it. He was complaining about a smell, which I had noticed all day coming from the recycling bin. He switched seats, fanned himself and covered his nose with his shirt. I did not realize that he could not actually smell the recycling bin, and was winding up to blame the 'smell' on the poor depressed kid who lives in a schoolbus with no regular running water. I cut him off as he began to ask if he had showered. I had no option but to minimize the incident in front of the class and deal with the bully outside. Apparently, I discovered later, this kid performs this routine all the time- so the rest of the class would have known exactly who he was harassing the whole time.

This kid is sixteen- not ten. If he was ten at least he could be talked to and affected. At sixteen he is somewhat unreachable (especially by a sub). A male teacher is going to talk to him about it tomorrow (he responds much better to males). But I am still annoyed.
