Okay, so I've really despised the fact that most of Brit lit has been poetry, and I excell when its novels, but I actually, so far, like the modernism post modernism poetry, of course-no surprise i'm sure.
well, I liked this one in particular, by Siegfried Sassoon. And it's brilliant, because yes, its about World War 1 i believe, but in a sense it can be related to most any war-just not entirely literally.
Does it Matter?
Does it matter?-losing your legs?...
For people will always be kind,
And you need not show that you mind
When the others come in after hunting
To gobble their muffins and eggs.
Does it matter ?-losing your sight?...
There's such splendid work for the blind;
And people will always be kind,
As you sit on the terrace remembering
And turning your face to the light.
Do they matter?-those dreams from the pit?...
You can drink and forget and be glad,
And people won't say that you're mad;
For they'll know you've fought for your country
And no one will worry a bit
i love the sarcastic tone directed to the homefront audience
and the cynical tone to the soldiers is depressing, but really gets to you.
its good.
i like it.
listen to it!
get us the fuck out of iraq.
