Well, I tried

I got Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse 5 out of the library; you know why.

All through Chapter 1, I was trying to figure out whether I liked it or hated it. It was all so freaking random, like a garrulous old chap rambling on about the past, which of course is what it's meant to be, and some of the random snippets were interesting but I kept thinking "Jesus Christ, man, get on with the fucking story, will ya??". And then, in Chapter 2, he finally does get on with the story, and, um, I didn't like it any better. It still sounds like an old guy rambling on, but less random - which should have improved it, but didn't because it was just a load of dry, uninteresting facts reported about a long line of people I haven't met properly and therefore don't give a shit about. No particular POV and no internal monologue, almost no reported emotions or feelings and therefore no identification on my part. I don't care enough to carry on reading. It's just dry and DULL, and I'd much rather be reading slash.

Fanfic has ruined me for stuff like this. RUINED, I tell you.

So it goes.
