For the last week I have had increasingly severe pains in my chest whenever I have done any sort of speeded up movement, walking fast or climbing stairs, it feels like someone is crushing my chest in a vice. Since I’m a bit over weight and my older brother has had a few heart attacks I was naturally getting a little worried, so on Monday I wandered down to the doctors and just in case I packed an overnight bag since they’ve ordered me directly in to hospital before.
The doctor listened to my chest and started poking around and after a few minutes he said “has your back been playing up?” and then he started prodding my back and shoulders and I started going ouch a lot and he discovered that I had inflamed discs in my spine level with my ribs which was causing all the pain so he gave me anti inflamatory tablets and sent me off
So being as I was cheered up and relieved and had my bag with me I popped down to London and went to see
Mary Poppins before it closes on Saturday
Its a brilliant show that you should definately see if you get chance while its on tour in various countries, although it does help if you know the books or you won't get who some of the characters are. the set is amazing a full scale georgian house on stage with an attic nursery and roof that all fly in in layers as people walk through it, the magic works very well, there is a kitchen that reassembles itself which is just a feat of amazingly accurate wire work, there is the classic scene of her pulling standard lamps out of a very small carpet bag over an open legged table (I KNOW how it works but I was in the third row and still couldn't SEE them doing it) the flying is well managed but its really more the little things that are so well handled that you forget they are tricks. And of course Bert tap dancing horizontally up the side of the proscienium arch and upside down across the top is impressive. the costumes are good and the well known songs have arrangements which means you actually listen to them instead of just singing along. If you don't know the books you might be surprised by the scene where the childrens' toys come to life and sentence them to death.
I had a seat on the end of a row and was joined by a little man who started making notes, we got chatting and he told me that he was the technical director for the first Swedish production of the show in Gothemburg later this year when its been translated, I saw the opportunity and flirted outrageously and he seemed very interested in my career and invited me to come to rehearsals in Sweden and gave me his phone number and email........... who knows what may happen
On Tuesday I wandered out to North Acton and bought a great many wigs in a very good sale and then had a gentle wander around London catching up with people and then met up with the handsome
holy13nation who kindly offered me a bed for the night as I didn't fancy rushing off for the train, I must try and see more of him this year we usually only catch each other late at night after work
