"Furn's Top 10"
(this is my list of favorite albums of 2002... many of you may agree and disagree, which is cool... but if you have beef with my list then show me yer "list" and then we can debate and argue about best and worse albums of the year,hehe...)
top ep's of 2002
1. Hot Cross;"A New Set of Lungs"
(screamo the way it should be played!... with smart lyrics, nice melodies, a hard indie rock sound with some harsh breaks,a-maaaaazing!...)
2. Dillinger Escape Plan with Mike FUCKING Patton; "Irony is a Dead Scene"
( DEP, one of thee best bands around today... and one of the best and most underrated artist/singers ever,Mike Patton.. both colabrated and made some of the most sonic sounds ever, known to music... not only did these two abstract styles colabrate but they did it well!... need i mention they fucking covered Aphex Twin!?!)
3. Cave In: "Tides of Tomorrow"
( i understand and respect many people don't dig the "new" Cave In,even Codeseven for that matter... but, to me good music is good music, regardless of how much a artist has changed there style of music... what is over looked is that Cave In makes good music... even if it isn't metalcore and this ep affirms that there on the right track... lets hope there full length is gunna be great *crosses fingers*)
4. As Hope Dies; "Birthplace and Burial Site"
( oh my god! is this release brutal, metalcore thats heavily influenced by swedish black metal.. musically, its kinda in the same vein as Meshuggah,
All That Remains and Heaven Shall Burn but with vocals more like Zao/Plague Thy Child... and to anyone who says Bleeding Through plays good metalcore with a dark swedish metal sound, i say FUCK ALL THAT!, cause Bleeding Through is a farace and plays false metal...)
5. Botch;"Anthology of Dead Ends"
(rest in peace *bows head*)
honorable mentions
Vaux, Pg.99 and Majorty Rule split, The Mars Volta, Brazil, Unearth...
Top albums of 2002
1. City of Caterpillar: "self-titled"
( this album is what a number one album of the year should be... its challenging to the listener... its music that evokes emotion, happiness, aggression and sadness, with all its harsh Saetia/Heroin/Swing Kids like sounds to the sweet gentle melodies that would please any Radiohead fan... this band is pure genius, there so all over the place that its even hard for me to describe there style of music... but to sum it up best C.O.C. is a punk rock band playing fugazi-ish post-hardcore, hardcore, screamo and indie rock all in its purest form with song structures that are most commonly done by Mogwai... but most importantly the key element to this band/record is passion... its passionate music made by a band who i believe would bleed,if not take a bullet for there art... thank you, City of Caterpillar for being a breath of fresh air in this stale state music...)
2. Sigur Ros; " ( ) "
( no sophomore slump here... this album allows the listener to make up its own interaption of what the songs are apart,literally... with no title to the album, no song titles or even lyrics... and the great part of this album is that every song was written for you, and only you... cause whatever you make of it, is yours and yours only...)
3. Godspeed! You Black Emperor "Yanqui U.X.O."
( anarchy never sounded so dreamy and mellow... without a single word being said, screamed ,sung or uttered through out this entire Lp, it assures that music does have a message... and isn't within the lines of lyrics being said... highly recommended for fans of Mogwai's "My Father,My King"...)
4. Atomsphere; "God Loves Ugly"
(underground hip-hop had a pretty decent year with El-p, Jurassic 5 and Blackalicous all putting out great albums... but this album really struck me as what an MC should be rapping about, it should be about there current state of mind and thats what Slug displays on this album... mainstream hip-hop is all about boasting what they have and what they're after... but what made NWA and Public Enemey so groundbreaking was how straight forward they were about there current status of how the feel about being oppressed by the world, there life, there city... before hip-hop became weak and a marketing tool, it was strong and powerful aka the Black Mans punk rock... and Slug opens he's heart and spills out how fucked up he is... its not a pretty album, its dark and somewhat sad... because, he's broken hearted and alone... which i'm sure,at times, we can all relate to...)
5. Curl Up and Die " Unfortunately We're Not robots"
(in the midst of shitty fashioncore bands, C.U.A.D. kicked this shitty state of metalcore/hardcore in the ass... the music takes the highlighted parts of Coalsece and smart grindcore/techincal metal, laced over by very witty and dark lyrics sung by J. Bannon-esque vocals... this album is fast, harsh, heavy and very smart with some electtronics thrown in for good measure... way to go guys, thumbs up!...)
6. Desaparecidos; "Read Music, Speak Spanish"
(i'll admit, i'm not a huge fan of Bright Eyes,so when i first heard this release i expecting alot out of it... and "alot" is exactly what i got... a strong debut that is very punk rock based compaed to most saddle Creek bands... it carries a very nice blend of intelligent lyrics sung by an artist who has various topics to say about its homeland... which reminds me alot of Bruce Springsteens "Born to Run" and Social D's "Between Heaven and Hell"...)
7. Isis; "Oceanic"
( kinda like how Curl Up and Die takes certain elements from old Cave In,Converge and Coalesce and make it there own... is kinda how Isis takes from Neuorsis' deep sludgish and heavy brand metal... this album proves that you can be very heavy and spacey and make it sound like the ocean...)
8. glassJAw; "Worship and Tribute"
(there's something about glassJAw that really grabs and capatives me... maybe its the down to earth attitude? maybe its the brillant blend of Morrissey-esque lyrics and Long Island hardcore mixed with Faith No More stylings?... or maybe its because there a very mis-understood band, and i'm able to get what is mis-understood by the outside listener?... in any case this album is solid, and it also shows that this band can tour with the heaviest of heavies (Shadows Fall or Love Lost But Not Forgotten) to the poppiest of pop-punk (New Found Glory or Simple Plan)... oh yeah, fuck Finch and any other band that has ripped off this band, you'll never be and good as the 'JAw...)
9. Elvis Costello; "When I was Cruel"
( the only album on my list that is diffcult for me to describe or explain... its almost kinda like how do you explain The Clash's "London Calling" or Refused's "The Shape of Punk To Come"... you can't, there just good albums, such is the case here... ***i'm NOT saying "When i Was Cruel is as good as either of the two albums i fore mentioned, i just used them as an example...)
**tie** 10. Eyes Upon Separation "I Hope she's having Nightmares"
(what do you get when you mix Zao-ish vocals with As the Sun Sets/ Dillinger Escape Plan music and the lyrics of Horror Show/The Dedication?... yep, thats right Eyes Upon Separation)
**tie** 10. Blackaicious "Blazing Arrow"
(like i mentioned before hip-hop really sucks ass right now, aside from a very few select artist... but,hip-hop being full of creative rhymes and beats... what has been missing from original music and soul... which is what Blackicious has done on this album... the soul factor is really thick here... if Marvin Gaye ever produced a hip-hop album, it would sound like this... plus, its kinda fitting that the title of the album is "blazing arrow" because thats exactly what it's intent is for... its an arrow aimed directly for the false heart of cheap watered down hip-hop)
honorable mentions:
PRIMAL SCREAM!,Dredg, Love Lost but Not Forgotten, Snapcase, Burnt by The Sun, Agoraphobic Nosebleeds!!!, Uphill Battle, the Fucking Champs, Norma Jean, ...And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead, MeWithoutYou, Vex Red, In Flames, Cancer Conspiracy, Meshuggah, Shadows Fall, Opeth ...
thats it thats my list... if anyone else who reads this would like to comment or post yer top 10 i highly encourage you to do so, i love to see what other people are listening too... and what they suggest i missed out on...
