Watched the extended version of the second Hobbit film (Desolation of Smaug) last night. I was very pleased to see that three things I thought were omissions in the version shown in cinemas were included:
1) The bit where Gandalf introduces the dwarves to Beorn two by two. I love that scene in the book, and thought they had scrapped it in favour of a completely different way of meeting him. But they did film it, and made it so it worked with the new version of the plot.
2) The bit where Bombur falls in the river, falls asleep and has to be carried through Mirkwood. Again something from the book that I thought would transmit nicely to screen, and indeed it turned out that they did film it. Again slightly different from in the book though.
3) An explanation for what has happened to Thrain. In film 1 we discover that he has passed the key and map to Gandalf, and that he disappeared after the battle of Moria. In the theatrical version of film 2 we discover a little bit more, but then he is never/barely mentioned again, and he is completely missing from film 3. But the extended film 2 gives answers - since this isn't in the book (maybe it's in an appendix somewhere?? I forget), I won't spoiler you.
