100 Historical Things, Number 21
Today is
International Museum Day, and I just wanted to give it a brief mention because in my opinion museums are wonderful things. Not that I think I really need to persuade most of my f'listers of that!
I always think that 'International X Days' are a slightly weird phenomenon and are quite often likely to be overlooked by most people. But I think this is one that is not only taken seriously, but that also inspires various events that may well catch your eye. For instance, those of you in Cambridge, I suspect that tonight's free entry
late opening event at the Fitzwilliam Museum is probably a response to IMD even though I haven't read so anywhere. (I can't go myself, but it is going to feature nice music and the opportunity to wander round the galleries at night, including the
Han Dynasty exhibition, so I would recommend it. I like the idea of museums at night generally. In Paris, the Louvre has cheaper late opening on some evenings, so locals often come by to wander round after work, which I think is a very nice idea.)
Anyway, perhaps I'll blog some other time about why I love museums so much, but in the meantime, readers, tell me your favourite museums and/or particularly nice experiences of museum visits. And, you know, if you have a chance, you could always pop into your local museum and honour IMD yourself.
