Dr Who 6x07 - A Good Man Goes to War

Yay!

My overall reaction to this episode is one of squee. And that makes me very happy, because I was getting worried that I wouldn't feel squeeful about this series at all (apart from the piratey bit, but that was mostly because of the piracy). I'm a bit pushed for time, but here's a quick review by numbers:

1) Yay for Rory :) He makes a great protagonist, and the description at the beginning that sounded like it would be about the Doctor but was then turned on its head to be about Rory the Centurion was very nicely done. And I like the Rory who can swan into a Cyber command ship or whatever it was and make them listen to him.

2) There was a lot of intratextuality, as it were, in this, and I quite like intratextuality as an idea, so I'm good with it. OK, so you could call it self-reference and make it sound like a bad thing... But I quite like that they mostly dwelt on this Doctor's adventures in looking for bit part support characters - Silurians and Space Pirates and all.

3) Speaking of Silurians, I LOVE the idea of a Victorian Silurian detective who takes care of crime and then eats the victims, while maintaining an are-they-aren't-they relationship with her hot servant sidekick. (And yes, they are.) More of this please. In fact, make it a spin off. I've always been a bit in love with Neve Macintosh anyway, and it was also nice hearing her native Scottish tones coming through playing this particular Silurian.

4) I also LOVE the noble Sontaran warrior. Sontarans are such wonderful characters, and this one was great.

5) How come the details of the gay married marine couple, and then they get no action? Well, apart from one of them becoming a Headless Monk - not that his husband had a chance to react to that. It seemed like we were getting two nice minor characters, and it was a shame to underuse them. Do we get more in the next episode? It didn't really look like it.

6) I liked the Headless Monks. The notted necks were also a very nice touch :D I do like a bit of scary, and they were good for it.

7) The Doctor was wonderful in this one. And they gave him the time and the decent script to be wonderful - something I think has been missing a bit from this series so far (except in The Doctor's Wife, where he had time to shine).

8) I LOVE LOVE LOVE angry Doctor. (But what does he mean anger is new??) Shouty!Doctor is just so... I can't describe it, just mmm.

9) And then we got sweet smiley floppy-haired lovely hot Doctor, both when he was interacting with Amy and Rory, and especially when he was talking to the dying girl who joined the army to meet him again.

10) And he speaks baby :)

11) Speaking of the baby, Amy and Rory were incredibly sweet. Rory's face when he came over all tearful when he was holding her - awwwww!

12) I liked the twist about the baby being fake baby. But I'm not sure I understand. When Amy was not-real Amy, was she made of Flesh? The same Flesh what the Gangers were made of last week? And yet she wasn't an individual - in fact, while real Amy was unconscious, she was also experiencing what not-real Amy was experiencing. Was it the same with the baby? Hmm.

13) So River is Amy and Rory's daughter... Oh, OK.

14) I love how the Doctor reacts when he realises who River is. It's not really a shock, and it doesn't upset him - he just gets all excited and smiley and it's incredibly sweet. I'm quite happy that the 'cliffhanger' wasn't a shocking Sherlock-type cliffhanger but rather an unresolved plot thread (albeit an emotional one) - it makes the waiting ever so slightly more bearable. So when do we get more? Want want want!

P.S. If anyone has any tips for finding high quality screencaps of this series (especially the sort with thumbnails on a web page, rather than zip files, since I only get 10Gb internet a month!) I would be very grateful, because I need to update my icons. I'll try the official website too of course.
