Did you watch Demons then? What do you mean you were too busy blogging about the new Doctor??!
Anyway, I thought Demons was very good, on balance. The little bitey things are so cute! And McKenzie Crook was just brilliant as Gladiolus Thrip - very very well acted. I didn't like Redlip though, despite once having had a very minor crush on the actor playing him when he was in Coronation St (that tells you how long ago it was!).
Philip Glenister was brilliant, as always. I don't think the Americanness is necessary (indeed, I know it isn't, because he said in an interview that they were happy for him to be English in it), but he is so cool - especially the black coat and everything. Yum. Christian Cooke isn't the most charismatic of actors, but he's fine as a teenager who didn't expect to have a vampire-fighting legacy. And I haven't decided about the girls in it yet; in particular, Mina didn't seem as mysterious as I thought she'd be.
The plot was reasonably good, but I have one minor complaint: why is it that ITV don't do morality?? On BBC, we've had three 7pm Saturday family shows that have displayed an important emphasis on ethical issues, namely Dr Who, Robin Hood and Merlin. ITV has had two contenders for this slot (cunningly never shown while one of the BBC ones was on!) since Dr Who was reborn in 2005, namely Primeval (2007 and 2008) and Demons (2009) - and in both there has been very little emphasis on right and wrong apart from the obvious basics. No exploration of anything complex, no possibility that e.g. demons might not all be bad, etc.
And two other complaints. Firstly, the CGI wasn't very good (indeed, it reminded me of Primeval, which has the most awful effects I've seen in anything recent). Secondly, the script wasn't great. But maybe these things will improve, we'll see. If not, I'll still watch just for Philip Glenister being in it and the fact that there's nothing else on on a Saturday night.
