Joss Whedon sighted; and there was much fangirling

Busy week. So much fun.

I saw my favourite political cartoonist at the Book Festival on Saturday; my old tutor also at the Book Festival on Monday, talking about history and being her usual brilliant self.

Then Joss!! at the Film Festival on Tuesday night. He was everything I'd been expecting: clever, witty, entertaining, with a smidgen of self-deprecation to leaven his obvious awareness of his own immense talents. He was also charming in a completely non-obnoxious way, something so few people seem able to do. I was silently fangirling from a 10-metre distance.

Then Serenity on Wednesday night. I'm not really going to review it other than to say it's the best film I've seen in ages. I came out of the cinema shot with adrenalin -- there literally isn't a spare minute to catch your breath. It also works as a movie if you have or haven't seen the series.

Incidentally, why is Joss the *only* man (with the possible exception also of Russell T Davies) who can consistently write women characters whom I can love and respect? Lots of women writers **coughJKRcough** could also take a few lessons from him.

Anyway, Serenity will not disappoint.

The Edinburgh festivals completely spoil me for the rest of the year.
