While it would appear everyone has currently stopped loving him, being President couldn't have lasted much longer anyway, and has returned to loathing him, having an angry mob jeer at him on the courthouse steps, he couldn't care less. After everything that has happened, there is only one thing Lex Luthor desperately wants to do and that is...destroy Superman. Utterly and completely.
Everything that has happened to Luthor is Superman's fault. Without his constant interventions and impediments, Luthor would have been able to do as he pleased and gained all he wanted. Plus, Luthor has finally had enough of their cat and mouse game. It is time to turn the tables and he knows just how to do it.
One would think that the best way to get Superman's attention would have been through his apparent one-time girlfriend, Lois Lane. However, there is much better bait. Besides, Lane is now married to that insufferable Kent.
Luthor has been secretly studying the Justice League for quite some time now and Superman's attention to one of his colleagues above all the others has not gone unnoticed.
Going directly after Superman is not only nearly impossible, but shows no creativity or insight. Going after Superman through those he loves, although attempted before, has never been done so more cunningly or precisely.
And the former President will do it by getting one man. Batman.
Luthor has seen firsthand how Superman looks at the masked vigilante.
Destroying Batman will destroy Superman. Ridding the world of two heroes is just an added bonus. Luthor simply wants to see the defeated look on Superman's face before he kills him. Then, every villain and criminal in the world will thank him for Superman's demise.
Hell, he might even get a “Thank you” card from Gotham for his troubles.
But first things first, Luthor has to get himself a bat. And he knows he will accomplish that feat easily...Batman is, after all, simply a man.
