The water was a beautiful, clear crystal blue while the sun was bright and warm on her back.  Selina preferred to be in the city, but since she’d been dragged there, she would enjoy it, “We’re only here for the afternoon, Bruce.  You have to get in the water!” Selina yelled as the waves hit her calves.

“Not part of the deal,” Bruce scowled from under the large cream colored umbrella.  He sat on the blanket, pulled his knees up and rested his arms against them.  He should not be out on his private beach when there was work to be done back in Gotham.  He had made a promise, though, and he always kept his word.  He simply had to find a way not to get roped into absurd promises like coming to the beach on the first day of summer.

“But you promised,” came a soft reproach.  Bruce sighed, knowing that he’d end up in the water eventually.  Helena ran towards him, her raven hair bouncing as she did so, “C’mon, daddy!  The water’s warm.”  She wrapped her small arms around his neck, covering part of his right shoulder with sand and sea water.  She kissed his cheek and sat down next to him.

She sighed dramatically like her big brother Dick taught her to do.  “You don’t have to go in if you don’t want to,” she said, her big, blue eyes looked up at him without accusation and he wondered if his parents did whatever he asked for when he looked up at them with that same innocence.

Helena frowned slightly and suddenly looked a lot older than her five years, “Mom says you’re scared of the water.”

Bruce quirked an eyebrow and looked at Selina swimming close to the shore, “She did, did she?”

“Uh-huh,” Helena nodded and half-smiled, but she did understand fear.  She was afraid every time her parents left her alone at night and went to work.  She never told them because she didn’t want them to worry, but she understood, “I won’t make you to go in if you’re scared, okay daddy?” She reached for his hand and tried to cover it with her two tiny ones.

In one quick move, Bruce stood and scooped Helena up in his arms, “You should know by now, you’re father is not afraid of anything.”

Helena squealed and giggled as he carried her over to the gentle, pounding waves.

Selina grinned when she saw Bruce carrying their daughter as they headed towards her, “Knew that would work.”

Bruce narrowed his eyes at her, but in a truly rare display of affection kissed her lovingly as he still held on to Helena; for once, he let himself relax and enjoy his small family.

Years later, when Helena tries to recall happier, simpler times, she always thinks back to that one summer day.  She can’t remember a time when they all had more fun or laughed so much. They made it back to the city in time for her mom and dad to go to work, but they both stayed at her side until she fell asleep before heading out.
