Ch.3 Mercy hated giving her boss bad news, but this time, she’d tried everything and it couldn’t be helped. She walked into his office and prepared for his outburst, “The woman is not in any database.”
“What?” Lex banged his fists on his desk. If looks could kill, Mercy would have evaporated on the spot. “I’ll find out myself,” he barked at her as he stormed out of his office. He took the elevator down to the ballroom and located Bruce and the long, raven haired woman almost immediately. He walked towards them and didn’t bother smiling at the various people would said hello to him.
“May I cut in?”
Bruce had not seen him approach, but he plastered his fake smile nonetheless, “Why, Lex, the song’s not over yet.”
Lex’s smile was genuine, disturbing, but genuine and he turned to the woman with his usual arrogance. Of course she would prefer to dance with him over Wayne. His smile disappeared, though, when he realized she wasn’t the one he was looking for. Same hair, different face.
“Oh, I would love to dance with you Mr. Luthor! Can I call you Lex?” she squealed, “It’s not every night a girl gets a chance to dance with two of the richest men in the world. How exciting!” she giggled and threw her arms around Luthor’s neck.
Bruce grinned, “She’s all yours,” and walked away.
Luthor tried to peal the woman off him, but she was surprisingly strong. He wanted to shove her aside, put there were too many people around and too many cameras on him at the moment. A new song began then and he cursed under his breath.
…
Selina locked the small office she had broken into. She pulled off the wig and removed the dress, then slipped into her cat suit. She had to get that information from Lex’s computer tonight and she only had less than fifteen minutes to it.
…
Bruce Wayne walked out of the ballroom, smiling and waving for the cameras as he made his way to the waiting car. Alfred opened and closed the door for him. Inside, Clark was sitting with his glasses off and he didn’t look very happy.
“What’s going on, Bruce? Why is Selina here?”
Bruce loosened his tie and took off his jacket. His brows were drawn together, eyes narrowed, and lips in a hard line. He stroked his chin with his thumb and index finger.
Bruce looked so pained and troubled, that some of Clark’s frustration diminished a bit and he moved to sit next to him. He placed a hand on Bruce’s knee, but Bruce recoiled involuntarily. Clark sighed and moved his hand back to his own lap.
“Bruce?”
“She shouldn’t be here.” Bruce looked out the window at the darkening sky, “She may be the one helping Luthor.”
After everything they had been through, Clark didn’t want to believe she would betray Bruce. Clark shook his head, “She’s working with Luthor? Did she go after the Kryptonite like you said she would?”
Bruce barely nodded.
“You weren’t able to get there in time to stop her?” Clark asked softly.
Bruce looked down at his hands, “I-there were…complications.”
Clark leaned forward and tried to look into Bruce’s face, “What kind of complications?”
Bruce finally looked up, his eyes filled with a rare show of sorrow, “I let her get away.”
It was like a stab to the heart and it took Clark a moment to process it all, “You mean she took the Kryptonite. You let her do it. And she’s giving it to Lex?” Clark felt ill, if he had not been sitting, he was sure he would need to. His mind was racing. He had put his marriage on the line for Bruce, for them… Clark looked away ashamed. He’d betrayed Lois and now Bruce had done the same to him. He considered flying through the roof of the car, but he couldn’t do that to Alfred. He knocked on the window separating the front seat from the back, “Alfred, please stop the car.”
The car came to a halt and Clark stepped out. The gush of air from his takeoff shook the car a little from side to side. Bruce’s sadness vanished with Clark and now only the anger remained, “Alfred, back to LexCorp.”
…
Catwoman carried a black satchel on her back as she rewired the security around the window and opened it with ease. The alarm didn’t go off and she smiled triumphantly. She walked noiselessly towards Luthor’s desk and slipped a small disk into the computer.
Mercy grinned from the other side of the darkened room. She crept slowly towards the thief. It appeared she was going to get back into her boss’s good graces sooner than she imagined.
…
A soft beeping sound went off from Luthor’s watch alerting him of an unlawful entry into his office. That eerie, satisfied smile returned to his lips. He excused himself from the woman glued to him and walked directly towards his private elevator. Seems the kitty had arrived earlier than expected, just like he planned.
...
From a mile away, Superman watched Catwoman work on Luthor’s computer. He couldn’t see through the box in her satchel and he looked away, disheartened and worried about what it meant. He closed his eyes and he could still see Bruce’s misery-stricken face as he did so. When he forced his gaze back to LexCorp, Mercy had just finished hitting the back of Catwoman’s head with the barrel of a gun. Instantly, Superman flew towards them.
