He’d lost Claude again and was in pursuit of the cranky misanthrope once more.  Peter was walking down the busy street when he spotted her.  It was difficult not to, actually.  She was walking towards him and stood out amidst all those who walked carefree and carelessly around her.  The expression on her face was pained and she looked deep in thought.

When she passed by him, he felt a strange wave of emotions and images hit him, then just as quickly as it came, it left.

What was that? he wondered and turned around to watch her walk away.  How he knew that she was considering getting “the cure” he wasn’t sure, but he did know that her mind was racing with reasons why she should get it and even more reasons why she shouldn’t.

The sorrow he felt - her sorrow - was why he felt compelled to follow her.  She was only a few feet in front of him and he noticed she somehow managed to keep her distance from everyone on the crowded street.  No one seemed to notice her as though that were her intention all along.  Despite those platinum streaks among her brunette locks, the gloves, and the green hooded coat she wore on this hot day, she was more invisible than he could ever be even while using the gift he’d gotten from his would be mentor.

She turned into a narrow alley and he didn't know if he should follow.  He decided to make sure she got to her destination safely, so he turned into the alley, but no one was there.  He looked around and back at the street, but he couldn’t see her anywhere.  He walked past the large dumpster and suddenly his face was pressed against the dirty brick wall and his right arm was being twisted in an awkward and painful manner behind his back.

“Why’re ya’ll following meh?” she asked, twisting his arm a bit more and glad she had been forced to take those self-defense classes from Logan.  She had removed one of her gloves while hiding and was ready to drain him if he tried anything.

He felt that strange pull again and then a surge of feelings and thoughts that weren’t his invaded his senses.  An aching loneliness, rage, fear, and images of a man with metal claws swirled in his mind and he wanted to get away from her.  Fast.

He focused and became invisible.

Surprised, she took a step back and spun around to look for him.  Remembering Magneto and the Brotherhood and not wanting to be taken hostage again, she glanced around warily, “Who’re ya an’ what do ya’ll want with meh?”

Peter reappeared at the far end of the alley, a few feet away.  The short distance seemed enough to keep him from pulling at her thoughts and feelings.  He looked past her at the people scurrying by, then back at her questioning gaze.

“I’m not here to hurt you,” he said, holding his hands up.

She studied him for a moment.  He didn't look harmful...but neither did she at first glance.  Maybe he was on his way to the get the cure, too.  He had just become invisible.  Maybe they could go together and she wouldn’t have to wait in that horrible long line all by herself, “Are ya’ll a… a mutant?”

“A what?”

She took a cautious step towards him.

“No!” he yelled and she froze in place.  A frown marred her lovely face and she couldn’t help but think it was because of her power…her curse.

He saw the hurt in her eyes and instantly regretted being the cause of it, “It’s nothing against you.  It’s me.  It’s just that…” he paused, unsure of how to proceed.  For some reason, he didn’t want her to think he was completely crazy.  Now he understood why Nathan never wanted to talk about their abilities made public.  He sighed, deciding to be honest, “When I’m too close to you, I know what you’re thinking and feeling.”

“Ya’ll are a mutant,” she whispered.  Like meh.   A small smile graced her lips, but she shook it away.  He can’t be like meh, he never touched meh, she thought.

“Look, I know how you feel,” he continued, “You feel alone, like no one understands, but I do.  Maybe I can help you,” he smiled, “Maybe we can help each other.”

She considered him for a moment.  His brown eyes, sincere.  His smile, genuine. When he held out his hand for her to take, hope sprouted inside her and she chewed her lip in contemplation.  She thought about Bobby with Kitty, Logan pining for Jean, and she knew she didn’t have anyone to go back home to.  She was about to accept when she looked down at her gloved hands.

This guy couldn’t help her.  No one could.  She only had herself and it was time she learned to accept it.

“Ah can’t.  Ah…” she shook her head, “Just leave meh alone.”

She turned and disappeared into the crowded street.

“Wait!” he yelled and followed her, but when he got to the sidewalk, she was nowhere in sight.  He strained his eyes looking for that unique platinum on brown hair, but she was gone.

There was a sinking feeling in his stomach, an emptiness he couldn’t explain, and he wished he could have convinced her that there is always a way.  There had to be.  For his own sake-and sanity-he needed to hold on tightly to that belief…otherwise, he would be responsible for the destruction of an entire city.

If he could have convinced her, it would have been easier to convince himself.  Peter looked around for her one last time, then began walking down the street again.  For some unknown reason, the word “rogue” kept popping in and out of his mind, but he ignored it.  He had to find Claude; the invisible man was once again his only hope.
