Catwoman ran quickly and silently, using her whip occasionally to get from one building to the next. She moved gracefully from one rooftop to another without ever missing a step, as though she'd practiced this run various times. Batman followed closely behind, reaching out to grab her on two occasions and barely missing her both times.

She was as elusive as usual and he was getting tired of it. When he landed seconds behind her on the roof of a warehouse he knew to be abandoned, he called to her.

“Catwoman, stop.”

Before she reached the edge of the building, she did. She turned around slowly and faced him. Her left hand rested on her hip and the other removed her goggles.

“Don't tell me you're tired of playing?”

“This isn't a game.”

Her red lips curled upwards and she walked towards him, stopping only inches away. He could feel the heat she exuded despite the cold night and he wanted to close the distance between them.

“Oh, but we can easily turn it into one,” she whispered and her breath caressed his lips.

Images of their night together flashed in his mind as her scent teased and danced around him. Though he was momentarily tempted, his resolve never wavered. It couldn't. Not when her life was on the line.

“I don't have time for this,” he growled.

Catwoman took a step back and crossed her arms over her chest.

“What do you want then?”

Batman looked at her intently, but didn't reply.

“Well?”

He reached into his utility belt and handed her the small item he'd stored there.

“You dropped this.”

“Really? Where?” Catwoman fought hard not to smile as she took the small ring from his palm. She leaned in and kissed the corner of his lips.

“The manor.”

“Ah. Did you...did you alter it?”

“Slightly.”

“Why?”

“When you press the stone, I'll be alerted to your location.”

“And what purpose will that serve?” she grinned, guessing at his answer.

Batman couldn't tell her he worried when she was out. Gotham was dangerous, especially at night. He couldn't tell her he was afraid something would happen to her because he wasn't there to protect her. That his mind didn't stop racing with horrible scenarios culminating in her getting hurt or worse until she was home. Safe. He couldn't tell her he didn't know what he would do if he ever lost her.

“In cases like tonight,” he began, his voice low, “I can follow the van you were pursuing and it won't get away.”

“What? I'd still be on its trail if you had not stopped me, which by the way, when we decided to give this...thing a try, we agreed we work together. I don't work for you, remember?”

He didn't reply, but almost let out a sigh of relief when she put the ring on her finger instead of simply disregarding it, like he was afraid she'd do.

“Well, now that we got that straight,” Catwoman put her goggles back on, “I have a van to catch.” She walked towards the edge of the building ready to jump off.

“I placed a tracer on the van.”

She stopped when she heard his voice full of condescension and turned to look at him over her shoulder, “So did I,” she smiled and disappeared over the ledge.

Batman stood still. He was still having trouble reconciling having a lover who was also his partner, mask or no mask. He had always been cautious about who he let in, he didn't want to lose another loved one again. But she made it all worth it and he suddenly wished he could take her away, far away, just the two of them-

A siren below broke his reverie. He knew she was capable, more than capable, but...well, he would think of other precautions later. Now, he needed to focus. He jumped down over the side of the building and went to work.
