merfilly's Memorial Day Challenge. I usually get an angsty muse, but she ran off today.
She sat comfortably in a chair on her balcony, resting her right hand on her swollen abdomen. The sky was a soft purple and the river glowed orange because of the setting sun. The Eiffel Tower was to the far right and small homes and large hotels were scattered throughout.
The dark and dingy streets of the East End seemed like a distant memory, even though she'd only left a few months ago. The last night she was there, she saw him...
The baby kicked.
“You're right,” Selina smiled, “I said I wouldn't think of anyone besides you and me. Thanks for the reminder.”
The baby kicked again.
“Getting crowded in there? Well, you'll be out soon enough.”
Selina massaged the side where the baby continued to kick. In a day or two there would be another person in the world. A person she made. And she couldn't wait.
It was strange. Eight months ago, Selina was terrified and unsure. Given her nightly activities and all the dangers it presented, pregnancy offered only more problems.
But now, her outlook was different. She would have a child of her own. A daughter. She wanted the sex of the baby to be a surprise, but curiosity got the better of her.
Here, she smiled more, laughed more. She was the happiest she'd ever been in her entire life. Even stealing two Monet's from the Gotham Museum in one night without the slightest detection didn't compare to the elation she currently felt. Of course, she missed putting on the suit, feeling the air rush her as she jumped from rooftop to rooftop, stopping those trying to hurt the innocent, being with her family, but she was not in any hurry to get back.
She would savor the anticipation, the birth, and the new little person in her life as long as she could. This baby had already given her so much, and Selina wanted to return the favor.
