“She makes people jealous of her without even trying. I’ve seen it! I mean, okay, I know Selina’s my friend and all, but I’m not blind you know? She’s gorgeous! I san see why people feel that way. She has a crazy perfect body and I know she works out - she has to for…you know - but not many people end up looking like her. If you saw her walking down the street you’d roll your eyes after you stopped staring. I know I would. And she’s the smartest person I know. Whatever she wants to get done, she finds a way and does it.
“There used to be times, way back when, when I wanted to be like her. I thought, if you look like that, how can you not have a better life, right? I think she could tell by how I acted or the things I said - I’m not sure - but she never made me feel bad about it. She actually tried to make me feel good about myself. And she looked out for me when she didn’t have to and when no one else even bothered.
“Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying she’s perfect. She’ll tell you the same thing. She’s made a lot of mistakes. One or two big ones. Really bad ones. But Selina always bounces back. And…actually, if there was one thing of hers I would love to have, it would be that. She doesn’t let the hard stuff keep her down. She always finds a way to get back on top.”
“I’d say ya doing pretty good yaself.”
Holly looked up from the cat to Harley standing in the doorway, “Hey.”
“Hiya,” Harley replied, playing with the hem of her shirt, “You know, if ya miss her so much, why dontcha go back?” she asked, trying to smile brightly, but it felt too forced and she shrugged instead, “I know I’d wantcha around if ya felt that way about me…”
Holly scratched the back of the cat’s ears one more time, then stood up.
“Selina has enough going on. She doesn’t need me to make things worse.”
“Ya don’t make things worse-”
“Anyway,” Holly interrupted her on purpose realizing Harley misinterpreted what had been said to their newest roomate, “I’m not going anywhere. I like living here with you.”
Good, Harley thought, her big, happy smile returning. Now, she wouldn’t have to beat up the catlady.
