ICON TUTORIAL 01

Well, I have a very simple method for making icons. xD; Though I have to say that my style is pretty unique, as far as I've seen. (let's see if YOU can find any icons as sickeningly colorful and sparkly as mine)

So here goes! This is a tutorial for PHOTOSHOP. How to turn

(click to enlarge) into

1) I start out with a page from manga and crop the part of the image I want. Tinker around with alignment and whatever until you have a nice base to work with. Make sure the base is 100x100 pixels.

2) Desaturate the picture. (shift+ctrl+U or image-> adjustments-> desaturate)

3) Taking this texture base from colorfilter, set it on top of your base layer and set the blend mode of the texture to screen at 100% opacity.

4) Duplicate your base layer and set it on top of the texture layer, setting the blend mode of this duplicate base layer to overlay at 100% opacity.

5) Taking this light texture from i_consent, set it on top of your duplicate base layer. Flip this light texture horizontally (edit -> transform -> flip horizontal) and set the blend mode of the light texture to screen at 100% opacity.

ONLY DO THE FOLLOWING IF YOU WANT TEXT. If you're satisfied with a blank icon, skip this step.

6) Use the eye-dropper tool to pick a color to use for text/brushes. You don't want it to be too dark or too light, but you can always change the color if you decide you don't like it. I chose the color #4c87ce. Using size 7pt Arial Black font, type the word "purity". Set the blend mode of this new text-layer to linear burn at 56% opacity. Under the blending options for this text layer, check the box next to outer glow. Make sure the outer glow is on screen at 75% opacity, and again use the eyedropper tool to pick a nice glow color. I chose #beddff. Move the text until it looks acceptable.

ONLY DO THE FOLLOWING IF YOU WANT A BORDER. If you're satisfied with a borderless icon, go no further.

7) Flatten the image. (merge all the layers) Duplicate the flattened layer and open up the blending options menu for the duplicated flattened layer. Set a 1-pixel stroke INSIDE the image, with the stroke color #ffffff. (no blend mode for the stroke) Set the blend mode of the duplicated flattened layer with border to soft light. (OPTIONAL, you can just leave it without a blend mode)

(black border just so you can see the white border)
And there you have it. A very basic tutorial showing you how I achieve the look that's rampant in my icons. xD; Sometimes I play around with patterns and brushes, too.

If you ever want to know how I made an icon, you have but to ask. ♥
