So here's the thing.
I love fandom, okay. I do. I'm both a participant and a beneficiary of it. It excites me, it delights me, it energizes me and it inspires me. I live in a stressful world, and fandom is the place where I come to play.
And I have a variety of opinions about Jon Favreau not being slated to direct Iron Man 3, which I'm not going to get into here because I feel it would detract from the point I'm trying to make. To wit:
I'd like to ask, respectfully, before we get ourselves all worked up, that those who participate in IM fandom and who are reading this now take a moment to ensure that you are looking at things with the proper sense of perspective.
Finding out that a good director, a good storyteller, is not planning to participate in the next stage of a franchise is frustrating, I grant you. It's annoying. It's disappointing. It's all of these things. But... seriously, you guys. The sun is going to rise another day, and--unless something drastic happens--we're all going to be as happy and as healthy and as safe and as loved as we were this morning before we were aware of this news.
This is a problem we're really lucky to have. We're lucky to be able to go to movies we like and to be able to express our opinions on the media we consume without fear of reprisal. We're lucky to have the capacity, because we're literate, to read the articles that are posted about the things that we care about. We're lucky to have the time and energy and money to devote to our fandom activities.
Not everyone gets to have that experience.
I'm not trying to make anyone feel bad or call anyone out--I'd just like to suggest an alternate way of looking at things. I've been around fandom for a long time now, and I know that there's a tendency for the fan response to get heated, to the point where it becomes disproportionate to the actual situation. And I'd hate for that to be the case here, because as I said, I love Iron Man fandom, and I'd like to be able to continue reading and writing and talking with all of you.
Additionally, if people are planning fandom fundraising/awareness efforts, I think it would be awesome to put that energy towards a charitable cause. We've been pretty lucky--maybe we should consider spreading some of that around.
i nitpick because i love,
let me tell you internets,
