I can recommend historical sites, because those are probably the same, but I wouldn't know where the good shopping or anything is in your world.
You have to go to Kyoto. The Museum of History is great, and the Botanical Gardens are worth a visit. Skip Ryoan-Ji. It's nice but it's always crawling with tourists. If you want to do one of the famous sites, try Fushimi-Inari-Taisha. Of the Imperial sites, Katsura Rikyū is the best, but you have to apply weeks ahead of time with the Imperial Household Agency.
