oof

so on monday, i was biking home from columbia university in manhattan to my apartment in brooklyn. about half a mile from home i was crossing a major avenue, when someone in a mercedes wanted to pass the car in front of him by jumping out into the parking lane -- putting the other car between him and me, and obstructing his view of me crossing the street during the yellow light. smack! i landed on my head (sans helmet) and lost some hair, severed my finger, broke a finger and toe, bruised up my knees and back... but i did survive! scary fucking shit.

my bike is trashed. and i want to ask for opinions... and help.

i'd really like to get a slower-moving bike to get around the neighborhood until i'm well enough to start commuting again. i'm interested in a cruiser -- but want an awesome cruiser! with fenders and racks, possibly a step-through, but i don't know where to begin looking (except for breezers, but that's out of my price range...) any ideas? i'd build one by my finger is fucked and i won't be able to use tools for a while.

the other thing is... and i feel crappy doing this... but i should be able to salvage everything off my fixie except the front wheel, and the frame is crumpled. i was wondering if anyone has a steel track frame with some tight geometry kicking around in nyc. i don't have much money, but i will offer what i can, including i will teach you all of the bike mechanics i know so you can do home repairs! (i worked in a co-op for two years and a commercial shop for a season). i can also offer homebrewed beer, homecooked dinners, friendship, and fresh vegetables from my CSA.

thanks everyone. bikes, wut wut!
