What amazes me, consistently, and I'm not sure why, is how selfish Americans are. Hundreds of thousands of people in Louisiana and Mississippi are dead or homeless, and then you've got people freaking the fuck out over paying more for gas. Perspective, people.
Also, HOLY FUCKING SHIT PEOPLE GAS IS NOT A RENEWABLE RESOURCE. You'd think things like this would encourage people to conserve, check out different energy sources, look for ways to reduce our dependency on oil...but no.
Is fretting about the people down there going to help them? Do what you can and move on. There's no use worrying about them all the time. Instead, we must then switch to our own needs. It's the basic way of things.
We've got many years until the oil supplies run out. Moreover, many, many car companies are already working on that. How about the new Ford Escape that gets 28 miles to the gallon in the city? Have you ever heard of an SUV doing that? In addition, Georgia Tech is currently working on a Ford Explorer, and last I heard it got 58 miles to the gallon city driving. The only problem is it's extremely expensive. Believe me, it's being worked on.
Go on with life, sure, but don't just forget about those people. Just because it doesn't affect one directly doesn't mean one can't feel the impact. But that wasn't even my point. The point is, Joe Suburban is bitching and cutting people off to fuel up his Ford Dominator to drive back to his cushy house in the suburbs, while hundreds of thousands of people have nothing left. It's all well and good to say there's no point worrying about them, worry about your own needs, but I could argue until doomsday that everyone worrying about their own needs and those needs including luxury SUVs that get 12 miles to the gallon are the reason we're in this predicament in the first place. I won't, though, because it'll fall on deaf ears.
And precisely, SUVs that are energy efficient are expensive, not because they have to be, but because that's how the Big 3 will make money. That's all they care about.
Whatever, my brain is mushy and this is rapidly fading into incoherence.
I'm a freaking socialist; what can I say. Kant had some good ideas. That's not even what I'm saying, though. Y'all are missing the point completely.
In the grand scheme of things, paying $3 a gallon for gas is peanuts. It's not like the oil companies tapped any one person to be unfairly persecuted by high gas prices, so folks should count their blessings and quit bitching. It could be a lot worse. That's all I'm saying.

It really needs to get up to 30+, like the VWs.

Selfishness as a basis for a code of ethics?
How Kantian
We've been learning about ethics in philosophy

I just want to fill 13 barrells with gasoline so I can fight off the terrorists in my gas-guzzling H2!
Not to mention my gas-powered blow torch. Let's go light up some towel-heads! Make them fear God! Even though we worship the same diety!
I hate this country sometimes
