He entered the door unsure of what he would find. Whatever it was, he was nearly certain it wouldn't be pleasant. The room was entirely off-white, from the painted concrete ceiling and walls down to the tile floor held in place between off-white grooves. The sight of the place was disgustingly bland. It was as if all color was absent not only in this small square space, but in the entire world outside of it as well. Even his skin looked lifeless as it reflected the monotone color of the void. He almost turned back to abandon his reasons for coming here, but it wouldn't have mattered even if he did, as the door had become one with the wall behind him, impossible to see where it once acted as gateway. As he took a deep breath the smell of nothing infiltrated his lungs, creating a feeling as if there was no oxygen to breath at all. He began to keep track of the seconds in his head as if they might be his last, but by the time he had counted forty, he would realize he was somewhere else.

Hues he had never seen before in reality surrounded him, greens and oranges you only saw in photographs after post-production. A dense forest lay in place of the square room he had just been. The trees and and grass stretched on for what must have been infinity. The sunlight streaking through the leafed ceiling created colored rays of light you expected only to see in biblical times when God spoke through the clouds. As his breathing returned to normal he could smell the scent of a thousand memories long forgotten, friends long gone, moments erased by less important ones he was forced to prioritize over by his life. A long-fading spark inside of him finally caught flame for the first time in years, filling him up with the once familiar feeling of hope. He never wanted to leave this place, never wanted to move from this single spot he stood in. It was as if nothing else mattered, but unfortunately he knew that something else did, and he took a step forward knowing it would be a step closer to the departure from this world.
