Ancient.. REALLY ancient footwear

I was doing some surfing the science boards and hit this little gem:

It may be that shoes were worn as long ago as 40,000 years. I wonder how shoes were classified? Are we talking about a proper foot enclosure, sandals, or are we talking about a "leather bag" tied about the foot? Alas, the only evidence of the shoes ancient man wore are his deformed foot bones.

I am guessing it was a foot bag or a piece of bark tied on... because we all know that primitive man was not as smart as we are now and could NEVER have had what we would recognize as footwear.
