Now I need to make some labels for my keyboard. The layout above is all the keys in each row on my keyboard. The second block of keys is with shift.
This was done using the SuSE Advanced X11 Configurator program under SuSE 10.0 Then there was also some changes to make in YaST.
Do not directly edit the XF86Config (actually the xorg.conf) file.
Bring up a console and type "sax2 --sysconfig". If you are not root, it will ask for your root password.
The sax2 program will start up its GUI. Select the keyboard icon from the menu. My primary setup is for type: Generic 104 Key PC, layout: US English, variant: basic. Under "Additional Layouts", I chose Russia, and a variant of winkeys. Click "Okay". Sax2 will ask you if you want to test your new configuration, but if you didn't change any graphical stuff, you can skip that.
Using YaST, install all the Cyrillic and Russian fonts.
Next, you will need to restart your X session. Just log out and log back in. You should now be able to switch between keyboard layouts by typing "ALT-SHIFT".
