Notes: prompt #89 - Work for fanfic100 Table | Day three of the Week of Jason Todd, which is part of Robin Month! I am so sorry for how late this was, my brain is all over the place (I think it's my fault for thinking this week would be easy).

“Hey there,” Jason waggles his eyebrows and rests his fists on his hips. Perfect hero pose.

“Reign it in, short stuff, I’m not here for a social call,” Batgirl crosses her arms under her breasts, which just kind of pushes them up.

Jason tries not to stare, too much. But really if he does it’s all her fault.

“He’s keeping the exciting stuff to himself, right?” Jason pushes up on the balls of his feet so he can see the top of her chest over the yellow bat. Batgirl’s probably cocking her eyebrow under that cowl, but Jason can’t tell, except for how her lips twitch. Kind of like him, but with breasts. It’s not bad.

“Stakeouts are a vital part of the mission, Robin.” It sounds like she’s reading the back of a cereal box for how much inflection she puts in it.

Jason crosses his arms over his chest and tries to drop his cape in front of his arms like he’s seen Batman do loads of times. It doesn’t have the same effect in bright yellow, but he didn’t pick the costume.

Sometimes Jason wonders if Dick got dropped on the head when he was a baby or something. “We know they’re in there, right?”

Batgirl slips her arms from under her chest and lets them hang at her side. “Right.”

“So why don’t we just go in there and kick ass?” It all seems perfectly simple. Not like they’re going to go on a crime spree if they can’t walk.

“Due process,” Batgirl says in the voice that means she means serious business.

It just makes Jason grin at her. “Well they’re due the process of us kicking their butts, right?”

She smiles, even if it’s for a second and then turns away. “We’re waiting to collect vital information so we can take them and the ones they’re working for down.” Batgirl turns her head, green eyes peaking out behind the cowl. “Then we can kick their butts.”

“Cool,” Jason hops up near her, balancing on one foot before setting them both down and attempting to have his cape hang in front of himself again. This outfit is just asking for someone to swing at him, which since he now can lay them to the floor is kind of cool. He doesn’t have to wait.

Although the way Batman scares the shit out of most of the scum of the city is pretty awesome. Jason grins again.

Batgirl sighs and she’s looking at him. She turns when Jason notices.

“You checking me out?”

Batgirl snorts. “Not on your life, boy wonder. I prefer my men in pants.”

Jason knew this outfit was dumb. He lets the cape fall back and flexes his legs, just subtly enough. “Like Nightwing?”

Batgirl gets almost as tetchy as Batman; she’s just a little better at hiding it. Or worse and Jason’s just better at reading Batman, how the hell should he know? Maybe if she sparred more with him. Or fought topless. “I haven’t, nor will I ever date boy wonders.” Her voice lowers like a warning, “Jason.”

Jason doesn’t take the hint and waggles his eyebrows again making the mask shift. “Who’s talking about dating?”

Batgirl scoffs and crosses her arms under her chest again; Jason tries not to get caught taking a long look. “I’m helping train you. I’m not the bat call girl, got it?”

“Your loss,” Jason flexes his hands in his gauntlets and takes a good long look around the city area. The perps are still talking inside the building. Nothing interesting so far. He hasn’t kicked in anyone’s head tonight. “So… you ever date him when he was in pants?”

“That’s not any of your business,” Batgirl says calmly and frowns at him. “And we’re working, Robin. Keep your mind on the job.”

Jason rolls his eyes and then hops up onto the ledge of the building taking a look down before hopping off. “Okay. How long did it take my,” Jason rolls his eyes openly this time so Batgirl can see, “predecessor to solve his first case?”

“That’s how he got the job. Sort of,” Batgirl shakes her head and glances at the device that’s letting her do something boring, whatever reason they’re on the roof. But she hasn’t told him to shut up yet, so that’s an improvement.

“You know his time around the city?” Jason curls and uncurls his toes in the stupid boots. One day he’s going to get big clunky ones with steel tips. Break some teeth. Only if they deserve it of course.

Batgirl glances away from the transponder or whatever she’s working with. “What do you mean?”

“You know,” Jason stretches his arms, because he’s bored and there’s nothing better to do. “The time from West Gotham to East, or North to South. Back and forth. What was his time?”

“Robin, we don’t time that.”

“Yeah right.”

Batgirl sighs. “It’s not a competition-” she bites her lip. “Okay. It’s not supposed to be a competition, but I can understand how Batman could give you that impression he and D-Nightwing were…” Batgirl sighs. “I wish you’d ask easier questions.”

Jason shrugs. “You gotta keep the edge on if you’re going to be protecting people. There’s no way to survive if you’re just going to be slacking off. You’re competing with bad guys all the time. The Joker doesn’t sit around on his butt in Arkham and not think of ways to improve. Two-Face keeps trying to get better. I mean if one side of his face feels like it. It’s only smart to keep up.”

Batgirl’s lips are thinned. “Yes, but the competition shouldn’t bleed over into us. That’s the problem.”

Didn’t seem like a problem to Jason. What good was the second edition if he didn’t overcome the first? If Dickie wanted to get better as Nightwing, fine. Jason was going to spank his ass as Robin. He could deal with beating his records as Nightwing later.

Jason leans over the edge of the building and turns around towards Batgirl. “Now?”

Batgirl presses the ear piece with one gauntleted finger. “Yes, but give it a second.”

Jason gives the street a good look and readies his jump cable. “How long would it have taken him to jump off this building and flip down over there?”

“Robin-”

Jason glances back at Batgirl over his shoulder. “I’m going to say nine seconds, just because I know it’s more. But I’m gonna do it in seven.”

Batgirl’s lips are pursed. Jason steps up completely onto the ledge and turns towards her. “You’d look hotter if you smiled every once in a while.”

Batgirl makes an interesting noise, but Jason doesn’t have a chance to catch anything else as he vaults off the building backwards, throwing his line up and catching himself.

It takes eight seconds. He tells himself he’ll do better next time.
