A friend of mine told me at lunch that he had taken up watercolors, and, casting around for something to paint, had hit on painting the empty space between forms rather than the forms, and on painting shadows. I thanked him profusely for this idea and pointed out that don Juan had suggested this to Castenada. "So," he said so humbly, "there's nothing new." He went on to say how much this exercize was quieting his ratiocination and helping his perception and intuition.
So with ______: our expectations are our own and have nothing to do with ______; our beliefs are about us, our labels are only our own short circuits for understanding and all function as distorting lenses.
Focusing on the space between forms allows us to see something new about the form and the relationship between forms. What we think of as direct sight is usually that which is most filtered through our preconceptions of what we will see, often that which is most interpreted, often that which is the most learned and least fresh, least open, least unmediated.
Anachrony was Levinas' term for seeing, in the face of the other, the other person's dead.
