Guildford for Shopping

Went to Guildford today, Si had some vouchers to spend and he wanted a town that had a BIG HMV and an M&S. Guildford fit the bill perfectly.

I would like to say that it brought back loads of memories of University but it just felt like another shopping town. Although 'The Drink' is now known as 'The Casino' nighclub and it's f***ing ghastly! It's the most distracting thing as you drive into Guildford and it's an horrendous blot on the town. It's a vast brick building that's been painted in tasteless black and it appears to have a lap-dancing club attached to the side. Scuzzy. There's a video screen out the front that shows people clubbing inside but it's hard to imagine how anyone could be having a good time in there.

So we went to The Friary, White Lion Walk and the FLAGSHIP! WH Smiths. Most of the places we visited were spot on, HMV Guildford is a decent store, the White Lion Walk is looking nice and the streets were busy and lively. WH Smiths are in trouble though. The shop felt dark and oppressive, with it's double-height shelving. There was a time when you could see from one side of a Smiths to the other, but these days it's stacked to the ceiling with tat. I'm surprised they've survived the recession so far!

Si got some nice shirts with his M&S vouchers, he was going to get a linen jacket but decided that he wouldn't wear it often enough to justify spending... a lot of money on one. He was delighted with the shirts he got anyway. I got 2 Elbow albums for £3 each - peeling off the stickers revealed they'd both been £4 and "2 for £10" previously. Si got a few more CDs with his HMV vouchers. A nice day's shop!
